Video: Altercation Ensues Between Paladino & Co. and New York Post’s Fred Dicker

September 30, 2010

“Crazy Carl” Paladino, the nickname for the newly minted Conservative Party candidate for governor, now has a new scandal to worry about.

Don’t take my word for it. Let’s go to the videotape:

Yikes!

That’s Carl Paladino trading barbs with none other than veteran Albany politics reporter Fred Dicker. As you already know, he writes for The Post.

Then, after shielding his candidate, you can see Paladino’s political guru Michael Caputo goes after Dicker, as well. Dicker is, at that point, only contributing to the drama, basically goading Mr. Caputo.

This was from The Wall Street Journal:

Carl Paladino’s campaign manager has described the Republican gubernatorial effort as one staffed by “junkyard dogs, not pedigreed poodles.” As if to prove that point Wednesday, Paladino and his campaign manager, Michael Caputo, entered into a heated confrontation with a journalist — and the episode was caught on tape.

Already known for angry rhetoric and strong language on the campaign trail, Paladino engaged in a verbal dispute with New York Post Albany columnist and editor Fredric U. Dicker. Things became so fraught that two men physically intervene at one point to prevent an escalation.

A video of the exchange, captured by a cellphone camera and posted to YouTube by a reporter for Capital Tonight, shows Paladino and then Caputo yelling at Dicker, who responds in kind. The incident took place in Bolton Landing, N.Y., where Paladino is speaking Wednesday night at a New York Business Council event.

In the video footage, Paladino accuses Dicker of being a “stalking horse” and “bird dog” for Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic candidate for governor. “I’ll take you out, buddy,” Paladino says.

“How are you going to do that?” Dicker retorts.

“Watch!” replies Paladino.

Caputo then made the allegation even more explicit: “You’re working for Cuomo,” he tells Dicker. “You’re a terrible journalist.”

According to Capital Tonight blogger Mike Whittemore, questions about an interview in which Paladino alleged that Cuomo had an extramarital affair prompted the heated exchange with Dicker, but the cause of the incident is impossible to determine based on the video footage.

Wow.

I can’t wait to see how this plays out in the news media. I can tell you this much: I’ll be buying The Post today.

We’ll have more commentary and coverage on this very soon.

  1. Carl Paladino is again in the national news with this "story" permalink

The problem is: Just what is this story really all about? It’s being placed inside of several different story lines.

Are the people who put out Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn in a “Tizzy” over this? That’s what some of the racoons with rabies over at Eaton’s “The Jig is Up Atlas” say.

Has Eaton gotten into bed with any of the Paladino people yet? Who’s the slut? Who’s the tease? Who’ll hate themselves in the morning?

Was that a crewcut John Haggerty in the background of Carl’s skirmish with Fred Dicker?
