Iraq Veterans For Congress Calls Out Allegretti For Using “Veterans and the Military to Advance His Political Ambitions” in New Press Release

June 16, 2010

It looks like things are getting rough for Michael Allegretti in the 13th Congressional race. He is now in an open media battle with a prominent military veterans group, something that’s never a good thing for a Republican.

That group, the Iraq Veterans for Congress, is now holding Mr. Allegretti accountable for his conduct in failing to remove photos of him with allegedly unwilling soldiers from his website.

The press release was received by Atlas a short time ago on behalf of Kieran Michael Lalor, the founder of Iraq Veterans for Congress.

You can visit Iraq Veterans for Congress here.

Here is their most recent press release:

White Plains, NY. (June 16, 2010) – A Staten Island Advance article dated June 15, 2010 reported that Iraq Veterans For Congress (IVC) requested that Michael Allegretti remove pictures of Marines and veterans from his campaign website because the group believed that Allegretti’s concern for the military and veterans was motivated only by political ambition.  (see previous press release below)

According to published reports, Allegretti campaign director of operations Steve Gonzalez called the request by IVC to remove the photos “desperate and shameful.”

Gonzalez went on to say that the request by IVC to take the down the pictures was “invalid, inaccurate and shameful at best.”

Said IVC Founder and Iraq veteran Kieran Michael Lalor, “I’m very surprised that Allegretti’s response to a simple request by a veterans group to take down pictures was met with such a bombastic and aggressive response.  I wish they would have just contacted us to discuss the matter instead of lashing out.”

Continued Lalor, “If calling veterans who make a simple request ‘shameful,’ ‘desperate’ and ‘invalid’ is Allegretti’s idea of veterans outreach, he just proved our point that he uses veterans and the military to advance his political ambitions.”

IVC is a federal PAC that supports the campaigns of Republican veterans.  The organization has raised more than $100,000 from 10,000 donors in all fifty states.  The Fox News Channel described the group as, “The driving force behind a nationwide coalition of veterans vowing to shake up Capitol Hill” e group’s mission is to help level the playing field for veteran candidates running against wealthy elites and career politicians.

Lalor reiterated that Allegretti had not yet answered the fundamental question asked by IVC.

“We wanted to know if Allegretti told the Marines in Dress Blues that he used for the photo op that he was going to slap their picture up on a website for a campaign against one of their fellow Marines?”

“This is a simple yes or no question that would help us determine if Allegretti is indeed exploiting our troops and veterans for political gain.”

We invite a comment from the Allegretti campaign, and we will be contacting them shortly.

Director of Operations for the Michael Allegretti Campaign, Steve Gonzalez came out like a roaring lion against Kieran Lalor founder of Iraq Veterans for Congress PAC, a nationally recognized veterans group.

According to newspaper accounts, Gonzalez, reportedly a veteran himself, said, “Lalor’s comments were a ‘desperate and shameful’ attack on the part of the Grimm campaign.” These are very serious charges to be leveled against Grimm’s campaign by such a high operative of Allegretti’s Campaign.

Is the Iraq Veterans for Congress PAC or Kieran Lalor a part of the Grimm Campaign or directly affiliated with it? If not, this Steve Gonzalez has committed a major gaff on behalf of the Allegretti Campaign and in the name of Michael Allegretti, the candiate.

Equally serious is the attack on the Allegretti Campaign made by Kieran Lalor.

The real issue in all this is a simple one. Did Michael Allegretti or his campaign exploit the photo with the Marine Corps League Members to the detriment of Alligretti’s opponent, a decorated Marine Corps combat veteran, Michael Grimm?

If the answer is yes, Lalor’s attack is fully justified, whether he is connected to the Grimm Campaign or not.

At this point, one is led to suspect that the Allegretti-Marine Veteran photo is indeed exploitive. Gonzalez already has given a mealy-mouth explanation when he reportedly said, “The picture with the young Marines was taken at the Brooklyn GOP’s Lincoln Day Dinner [and] Allegretti was invited to pose with the Marine Corps League members, ‘not the other way around’.” This excuse begs the issue as to whether the Marines knew that the photo would be used to the detriment of a fellow Marine. Furthermore, Gonzalez explanation is just a bit too precious– “Allegretti was invited to pose with the Marine Corps League….”

BY WHOM WAS MIKE ALLEGRETTI INVITED TO POSE WITH MARINES AT THE BROOKLYN LINCOLN DINNER, Mr. Gonzalez?

Could it have been Kings Republican Chairman CRAIG EATON or some other Brooklyn Republican Organizer of the event? That would be very interesting because that would be a hook directly to the Allegretti Brooklyn operation. Or was the “invitation” from one of Allegretti’s own staffers, perhaps a veteran who would know the value of such a photo op, someone not unlike Steve Gonzalez?

To quote Lord Tennyson, “…Someone had blunder’d….”

    Allegretti is a Republican?

Hasn’t he ever heard of the firm rule that you never attack veterans if you want to win a primary? And you can’t send a veteran to attack a veterans group! That’s not a way around the rule.

But why am I surprised? This guy is working with thugs like the Bay ridge gang of the party. Speaks volumes.

    Kiss kiss…

Roy: Don’t worry, Michael Allegretti is just as laughable.

His Issues state: “I do believe that government has a role to play in helping consumers protect themselves in the marketplace and in rewarding certain types of behavior by the private sector, but it cannot be allowed to make decisions for the private sector.” Ok, fair enough- government cannot be allowed to make decisions for the private sector. But government apparently has to help consumers protect themselves? And it’s government’s role to “reward” behavior? If you’re running on the Republican ticket, you need to come to the realization that you’re running on the party line that is supposed to limit government, not give it an inch and watch it take three miles. No one rewards “certain types of behavior” except for the market and the consumer. When government “rewards behavior,” that’s called crony capitalism. It’s glorified Keynesian economics at best. Government’s only role in the market should be to eliminate fraud- not reward or helping consumer “protect themselves.” Consumers should be able to make a purchase without the heavy hand of government. Those candidates who “protect” consumers are called Democrats and they tend to take protection two steps further; they tax you.

Energy and Environmental Law Amendments (“Cap and Trade”)

    HR 2454.

“Vote to pass a bill that amends various statutes related to energy, including, but not limited to, establishing a cap and trade program to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Raise gasoline prices by nearly 53 percent”

“Raise energy prices by more than 86 percent”

“Reduce economic growth by 1.9 percent (about $256 billion of GDP”

“Reduce economic activity across most industries including the construction, manufacturing, transportation and finance industries”

“Exert upward pressure on overall prices and interest rates.”

“This bill would lead to increased expenses for American households of thousands of dollars per year.”

This bill has been lobbied by and supported by Allegretti.
This is not who we want as our Congressman.
Allegretti, the real and true Republicans wish for you to gracefully exit from the race and save face. You are an opportunist, an abomination and an embarrassment to the Republican party. Go back to Chelsea and live amongst the liberals. You have worn out your welcome.
