Brooklyn’s Own Son of Liberty Roy Antoun Tells Us Why He’s “Shrugging with Atlas”

June 12, 2010

Some have called him the “philosopher of the Brooklyn GOP Revolution.” And if the GOP establishment had a “Top Ten Most Wanted” list, he would be in the top five.

But I prefer to refer to Roy Antoun as Brooklyn’s very own Son of Liberty.

I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Mr. Antoun over the past few months, and what seems clear to me and many of my colleagues is that this is a man deeply committed to the cause of reform in our party. None of us pretend to be right 100% of the time and reasonable minds will disagree. But Roy Antoun is certainly a worthy adversary for the forces of status quo in local politics and beyond.

Now, he has kindly shared with all of us why he too is shrugging in Brooklyn.

This post was put up on his Facebook page and his personal blog:

The Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn blog has been the leading dissenter in the front lines combating the neoconservative Brooklyn GOP establishment. I don’t write for the blog, but I most certainly do support their efforts in pushing for smaller, limited, and transparent government. And I know clearly that the bloggers on this website understand that cannot be done with the Democratic Party in New York. But the sad part is, it can’t be done with the Republican Party in Brooklyn either.

For many Brooklynites, lower taxes and less government intrusion on their private lives are a far cry from what we currently have. The Brooklyn Republican Party, which is supposed to be the party of smaller government, is defunct. No one knows where the money goes and election results clearly show that. And does the party chairman even bother to support principled candidates? In the words of John Boehner, “Hell no!” Did he help my good friend, Jonathan Judge, in his campaign for City Council? Hell No. Is he as clueless about Ayn Rand’s philosophy as the rest of the twits running the party? Hell yes.

I’ve been attacked repetitively by the party establishment for thinking differently. I’ve been attacked because when I say I believe in small government, I really believe in small government. When I want an unnecessary war to end because it’s costing we, the tax payers, a ton of money, it means I want true peace. When I say government is the biggest proponent of corporatism and monopolies, I mean government truly is the biggest proponent of corporatism and monopolies. But what has the establishment done? They have praised big-government “republicans” like Scott Brown, and democrats in Brooklyn. They have outlandishly declared themselves as “Hate Bloggers” and engaged in racist dialog about Arabs living in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights. The last time I heard a political party outwardly profess hate in the public, we had the holocaust and National Socialism, which isn’t too far off from how the party actually operates in its exclusivity to its members.

So, in lieu of this little Revolution, I give my full support to whoever is running “Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn.” I shrug with you.

Antoun has truly become a target for the establishment, which is something we here at Atlas warned from the beginning that the Bay Ridge Cabal would do to those that challenged them in even the slightest way.

Mr. Antoun is an independent thinker, the most feared kind of person in local politics today.

Indeed, that’s why our blog has become one of the most frustrating things for the Brooklyn GOP “leadership” in–I dare say–their entire tenure. Why? Because we are not owned, operated, managed, or engaged in groupthink, as they apparently are. And we do not take personal credit for the reforms we promote, which is anathema to the ego-centric ways of the Shore Roadies.

So, we’re not invited to their cocktail parties and would likely not make it past the threshold at a Theodore Roosevelt Republican Club meeting. As one emailer put it: “You don’t know how much you guys frustrate them.”

Well, as much as we don’t mind that fact, we never sought that relationship. From the start, we extended an opportunity to the establishment to respond to criticism and address the needed reforms in our party.

That was simply not done.

And so now we watch as the establishment and their online blog proxies tell vicious lies and continue to deny accountability for the failures that have occurred during their tenure.

Meanwhile, we have received numerous emails telling us how dismayed fellow Brooklynites are by what they’ve learned reading our blog. We have encouraged them to stay strong, get active and promote reform-minded candidates and values. But so many remain stunned by the continuing soap opera that is the Bay Ridge Cabal.

For that reason, it’s important to have public voices like Mr. Antoun’s and, for that matter, Jonathan Judge’s, grabbing the attention away from the antics of those blogs that comprise what we call the bizarre Brooklyn GOP’s “cyberhateland”:

In my personal opinion, these men are demonstrating true Republican activism and are promoting reform in a way our party should have been doing collectively as a matter of policy for quite some time.

But fear not.

If the Brooklyn GOP Revolution is successful after all, then maybe the ramshackle Bay Ridge Cabal will finally and rightfully be bulldozed.

Then we can see how this message of reform can truly transform our party.

Once again, our blog thanks Mr. Antoun for his support and vision, and we wish him and all of you reformers out there the best in your endeavors!

Roy Antoun is standup and standout guy, just like his friend and compatriot Jonathan Judge.

There’s a lot about Roy that I don’t know, but I can truthfully say that about everybody with whom I’ve been associated in politics. So far he has been as admirable.

It seems clear that Roy is willing to be controversial– and he appears to be willing to pay the price for that, for now. There are not many among us, who would be willing to put themselves so at risk.

The Eaton-fostered hate blogs just give a small taste of what can be done to anyone who is truly an individualist and speaks out for what they truly believe.

The other side in this fight in Brooklyn have really not yet engaged, except in the most petty and superficial ways– that includes their specific attacks and forays against Mr. Antoun to date. What’s happened to Roy Antoun so far in the early stages of this fight for the soul of the Republican Party in Brooklyn is minuscule and nugatory.

I am certain there is more to come from Roy and a bigger price will be paid as his career unfolds. It’s my sincerest hope that there isn’t a big balloon payment that Roy will have to make, some time down the road, for his having been such a controversialist on behalf of this our Brooklyn GOP Revolution.

Lucky for all of us, Roy willingly has been in our vanguard– for that alone, may he live long and prosper.

I continue to be amazed by how profane and vulgar the Brooklyn GOP establishment can be. I guess it demonstrates how weak they are that they feel the need to put up daily posts calling someone a “D-bag.” Must make them feel “manly,” especially given their childish ways.

I’m not sure if they realize their prime enemies are likely 30-40 years younger than they are.

I wonder who’s going to win that battle? (Sarcasm)

Roy Antoun is the only Republican spokesman in Brooklyn that has openly espoused a Ron Paul style libertarian Republicanism that is a necessary countervailing force to the “Neo-cons” who are far from truly conservative.

The Brooklyn GOP needs to hear more from that libertarian element of Republicanism, locally. I’m sure they’re out there. Speak up like Roy Antoun has; he’ll like the company 1-2-4-8-16-32-64….. soon an active contending wing of the Brooklyn GOP.

Roy, until that happens– trek on lonesome warrior.

But, then again, beauty is the mote in the eye of your neighbor sometimes, maybe I make out on some of the Jig’s mis-attribution. Quantitatively, though, I figure I’m down about 25%.

That’s right, folks! The blogs have gotten so hard for the party to deal with that now they have to insult the great tradition of talk radio and make THAT fail, as well.

Destruction is the MO of the Brooklyn GOP, it would seem.

I love that Gene B, amateur radio host, is now trying to inflict his grating voice on the five or so unique listeners who tuned into the GOP’s last best chance to hoodwink local Republicans into believing he and his cabal are relevant.

    What a contrived lovefest!

Starting off with a bang? With whom did this Radio premiere start?

A “star” like Michael Allegretti? Craig Eaton? Peter Cipriano?

These are all names that wouldn’t bring one single person to one of Marty Golden’s infamous rubber chicken dinners.

Allegretti was tripping over himself to thank Gene for making him relevant. Only Celeste Katz is a name I would be interested in.

    But this prerecorded kiss-ass seminar?

To quote John Stossel: “Give me a break.”

      Big surprise.

Gene admits he “kinda threw the show together at the last minute.”

      Big surprise.

(I was rolling on the floor!)

Gene said “he doesn’t run anything.” He leaves that to Ted on the law committee.

      Big surprise.

Gene admits Craig Eaton told him to put this together.

      Big surprise.

Gene kisses Craig’s ass like it’s his new girlfriend.

      Big surprise.

Craig talks about “cocktail parties” as a source of his relevance.

      Big surprise.

Craig says that State Senate terms are every “two years,” and beacuse the audio is poorly edited, you can tell they tried to cut that line out.

      Big surprise.

Craig says Marty Golden is one of the greatest elected officials in the history of the country.

(I’m not kidding… But, when you think about it:)

      Big surprise.

If you look at this like Sigmund Freud might, the “Brooklyn GOP Radio” stunt gave an insight into what’s going on with the other side, really deep inside.

First, this is the second major projection of Gene Berardelli as the Brooklyn GOP spokesman and frontman (remember his regular column for the KCRP official blog). This is what the Craig Eaton-Marty Golden faction thinks represents the face and voice of the Brooklyn Republican Party. Let’s call that the “self-image” component– enough said.

Next, they push their current obsessions out front wanting to lead with Mike Allegretti and follow with Peter Cipriano. The former, Allegretti, is a real “Babbit” empty suiter, still looking for his voice and his message and coming up empty on all counts. The latter, Peter Cipriano, showed that he may have more on the ball than anybody else, he stayed away, far far away. Gene Berardelli helped the young man commit suicide in absentia by highlighting Cipriano’s absence and damning his campaign with backhanded praise.

The piece with Celeste Katz showed everything that was wrong with the current KCRP regime under Eaton. She had some interesting anecdotes with some bight about the recent GOP convention, and Berardelli just treated them like they were routine talking points to be answered with his talking points.

On the whole, listening to hear Gene Berardelli tell it, Republicans like Eaton and Golden, and Gene himself, couldn’t be happier with each other and the Brooklyn GOP– things were never this good. Yet, it’s clear that he/they know something else is coming their way and hope that somebody “new” in radio-blog land will make it all better.

Brooklyn GOP Radio, like the Brooklyn GOP — condescending, conflicted, confused….

As soon as they find a permanent home for the National Radio Hall of Fame and Museum, let’s be sure to keep a niche open for Kings County Republican Party Chairman Craig Eaton, because he is sure to be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame class for 2010, bumping out a far less deserving guy like Howard Stern, who never invented anything.

…Barber’s talking to Sam Adams, Ben Franklin and George Washington and telling them about the IRS and mandatory health insurance, when he he really gets excited and says “I’ve taken an oath to defend this…” he points down at an ancient parchment and exclaims, “You revolted over a Tea Tax…a TEA TAX!!!” The camera pans the faces of Sam, Ben and George.

Washington looks Rick Barber in the eye, nods and answers thoughtfully,

Really, this was quite accurate, a rarity on the Jig is Up Atlas– as bad as Gene Berardelli was, and he was horrid, making him the face and voice of the Kings County Republican Party or “Brooklyn GOP” is a quantum leap over the face and voice of Craig Eaton, a storefront hack lawyer, who shares a practice on a secondary shopping strip in Sheepshead Bay. Later, Hy Singer does his best David Frost impression asking Greg Easton (the name Singer reportedly gave to Marcia Kramer–or did she give Singer that version of his name?) whether he could do something illegal in the best interest of “Bay Ridge Nation,” which his cabal affectionately refers to “Brooklyn” as.

49th AD King Hrothgar has sought heroes to slay the beasts before, but no one has thus been successful. Then again, no one is Beowulf, after all.
