Atlas Corresponds With Indignant Theodore Roosevelt Republican Club Regarding Recent Controversy

June 2, 2010

For those of you who did not read about the recent expulsion of three 44th AD Republican County Committee members from Gerry O’Brien’s Theodore Roosevelt Republican Club, please read it here.

Shortly after it’s publishing, we sent a letter to the club with inquires about the facts alleged by individuals who emailed us discussing the expulsion of these people from the club’s open meeting to the public. In the interest of full disclosure, I thought I would post these emails for your reading pleasure.

We wrote the following:

Dear Theodore Roosevelt Republican Club,

I write on behalf of a local Republican/libertarian blog that discusses GOP politics in our borough, city and state.

Recently, it was brought to our attention that at your club’s meeting this week, three county committee members of AD 44, the district your club claims to represent, were escorted out by a police officer and by Brooklyn GOP political consultant Gerry O’Brien. This story and the surrounding allegations have been detailed on our blog, which we invite you to read:

https://atlasshrugsinbrooklyn.wordpress.com/2010/05/26/breaking-news-three-members-of-the-brooklyn-gop-county-committee-denied-access-to-theodore-roosevelt-republican-club-by-gerry-obrien-police/

After reading our piece, we invite you to offer any comment on the situation and your side of the story. We also have some questions which, if answered, would go a long way in getting to the bottom of the allegations against your club.

Is Gerry O’Brien affiliated with your club? If so, how? What position does he hold? Does he have the authority to remove visitors to the club? What is your opinion of the various allegations made against him in last year’s 44th City Council race of physically assaulting the President of the Brooklyn Young Republican Organization and of stealing election materials?

Was the most recent meeting of our club open to the public or by invitation only?

Was the police officer who escorted the three county committee members out of your meeting’s premises on-duty and sent from 911 dispatch? If so, who contacted the police? Is he a member of your club? Was he invited to attend the meeting?

Were Brooklyn GOP Chairman Craig Eaton and Brooklyn Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar at your most recent event? If so, in what capacity or for what reasons?

Any relevant answers to these questions will be expressed to our readers and to the original county committee members who made the allegations.

A prompt response would be appreciated so that you can have your side of the story reported as soon as possible.

Regards,

Dagny Taggart

Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn

Within a day of our email, we received the following reply from an unnamed spokesperson from the club:

Thanks for your email.

This is America. We’re entitled to invite whomever we choose to attend our meetings. Since your three friends were part of a disruptive group that delayed last fall’s county committee meeting by several hours, and prolonged it with parliamentary gimmicks for several more hours, we have no desire to subject our members to their nonsense.

It’s difficult enough to get people involved in politics under the best of circumstances. We respect our members and guests, and we don’t want to waste their time while your three friends froth at the mouth about this week’s perceived conspiracies.

In addition, each of the three individuals in question made remarks in the past about their desire to be affiliated with a Republican Club not named after Theodore Roosevelt. That is their choice. They are not members of our club.

We were going to respond to your other comments, but after having an opportunity to look over your site and its comments, we believe it would be pointless.

We note your blog’s insulting, juvenile comments about our club and our
members. Your continued attacks on senior citizens (or anyone over the age
of 30 apparently), Irish-Americans, Catholics, and anyone who disagrees
with your childish antics, is reprehensible. Your approach to what you
think is politics has no shame.

While we may strongly disagree with other political blogs, we can usually respect them. Your blog is below contempt, and continues to spew the most vile kind of hate, lies and disinformation. That you claim, with a straight face, to be “reporting” or “investigating” anything is laughable.

Perhaps in a few years, when you mature politically and emotionally, you and your friends may be able to have a civil conversation with other
Republicans. Until then, you are merely barking at the moon like a pack of wild dogs. We can only hope you’ve had your shots.

— The Theodore Roosevelt Republican Club

In response to this offensive email, we replied with the following email:

Some responses to your email.

First, “subjecting” your members to individuals who only follow lockstep with your views is paradigmatic of Soviet values, not Republican ones. You decided to hold an open meeting and publicly invited people to join you on your website. Then, you cherry-picked the people that you permitted into the meeting and threw out three members of your club district’s county committee. Whether they were members or not, you still kicked county committeemen and women out of your club space at this open meeting, and besides disagreeing with the leadership of the Brooklyn GOP–which isn’t a reason at all–we do not understand why you would kick them out.

Again, your reasons for doing so are because these three individuals spoke out against the current establishment last year. But so did numerous other Republicans, as we all recall. Part of exercising leadership is working with those with whom you disagree. That is apparently a leadership trait you and the inept Brooklyn GOP Cabal share.

How sad.

The fact is most of the divisions that have arisen in the past year have been the result of the GOP leadership not addressing the concerns of reformers in the party.

Second, to be clear, these people are not “three of our friends.” We do not know them beyond the fact that they are members of the AD 44 county committee. We received an email from a source disclosing the version of events we reported on our blog. So far, you have not denied one single allegation that we reported, which we believe is quite telling.

Third, we have an open forum on this blog, and a whole host of individuals post comments, some of which are meant to be comedic, informative or just expressing anger. But the substance of the writing that we post as stories has no comparison to the types of “hate blogs” allegedly managed by and unquestionably permitted by members of the Brooklyn GOP establishment, most notably the leadership of the 47th AD. Do not confuse our blog with those blogs…

If by “childish antics,” you mean “educated opinions,” then yes, we have gone after people who disagree with us. As you said, this is America. We can do that. And we do.

Fourth, given your prior diatribe, the fact that you find our blog to be “below contempt” is more of a compliment than anything else. You say our blog “continues to spew the most vile kind of hate, lies and disinformation.” Please provide examples. We have always responded to emailers who have requested that grossly inappropriate or inaccurate commentary be taken down, so long as it is justifiable to do so. Indeed, we’ve even taken down comments at the request of members of the Brooklyn GOP leadership that have fallen into those categories.

The fact that you or your affiliates do not like to be criticized, however, does not concern us. The Brooklyn GOP leadership is comprised of political figures. They are serving our fellow Republicans. They must be held accountable for their actions, and when we disagree with those decisions they make, we will voice them, as is our right in America. But what we will not do is go on a hate spree and attack the person’s nationality, family background, or any other irrelevant manner that does not address the person’s political faults, as other blogs do.

In conclusion, we must say it’s a shame that you’ve sought the low road in what was an opportunity for you to explain to the Republican readers of our blog why the alleged tactics used by your affiliated members were justified. Instead, your imperious tone will impress no one and only confirms the sentiments of many GOPers regarding the party leadership: that they are arrogant and do not feel the need to answer to their constituents.

How tragic, but it’s your loss…

And as for “barking at the moon,” I think you underestimate the “bite” so many Republicans in this borough have when it comes to taking on the do-nothing party establishment.

Your mistake. But, then again, based on this email, you seem to excel at making mistakes.

The only difference now is that people are holding you accountable for them.

And we will continue to do so.

***

We don’t take offense to the comments of the Theodore Roosevelt Republican Club. We don’t expect to be treated well by the establishment. They know your message and our message has been carried across the entire state, and we have received confirmation of that fact from numerous sources.

I can promise you: your voice has been heard.

Now, our blog is far from perfect. For every pleased visitor, I’m sure we have an equally unhappy customer. But we try our best and we deliver in a style we hope you will enjoy. We will always be criticized for our open forum, but it’s worth the criticism to hear your voice and give you an opportunity to share your thoughts. As a result, every week, we receive numerous emails from readers and from political sources all interested in our common goal: reforming our party.

No matter what, that will continue to be our goal, and we will not be bullied out of seeking a better Republican Party in Brooklyn.

Please Note: We still welcome any emails from members of the T.R.R. Club or who witnessed the events to give us their statements so we can continue reporting on what happened. Please email us at atlasshrugsinbrooklyn@gmail.com.

  4. Argumentum ad Hominem permalink
    June 2, 2010 11:17 pm

This thread about the TR Club flap is a good place to “bell the cat” on one of the other side’s bloggers’ favorite tactics and techniques. Here’s what’s going on most of the time.

“Argumentum ad hominem” is the logical fallacy of attempting to undermine a speaker’s argument by attacking the speaker (or something or someone identified with the speaker) instead of addressing the argument. The mere presence of a personal attack does not indicate resort to the ad hominem fallacy: the personal attack must be used to undermine the argument in some way, otherwise the logical fallacy “Argumentum ad Hominem” isn’t in play. Thus, it is not a logical fallacy to merely attack someone; the fallacy comes from assuming that the personal attack also necessarily is an attack on the attacked person’s arguments.

When you peruse the other bog…er blog, you might think that you are seeing the classic “Argument ad Hominem” or at least a significant use (probably overuse) of the technique. If so, that’s perhaps accidental or, more likely, incidental to what’s really going on.

What’s being done by Eaton’s Internet Goons comes directly out of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”. Their techniques are intended to marginalize both the argument and the person(s) advancing the argument.

Sometimes they will try to drown out the opposition by creating noise. On their blog they often engage in lots of meaningless chatter as their apparent response to substantive questions, replies and arguments.

Other times they will “deconstruct” the argument– using the same words and formulations, but in absolutely different contexts, often by substituting the names of their political adversaries into those adversaries’ arguments– sort of a bizzaro reduxio…

Most often they will say “____has blood on his/her hands” and “Jonathan return the money”.

The last makes for a good drinking game while reading their blogs; and that’s the only reason I read them.

Joe English, the Seergy Chairman of the Board, wasn’t always a Republican.

Could it be they all were once Democrats?

Could it be they all once were DEMOCRATS– AND — They carried around Saul Alinsky’s “Handbook for Radicals” and did overnights with Peter Abbate at Alwon Headquarters?

The Teddy Roosevelt Club has a long proud history of Female State Committemembers immortalized in the movie THROW MOMA FROM THE TRAIN.
Maybe it was throw the independent Republican women under the bus.

This is also a trait of Kings Republican Chairman Craig Eaton who is clearly female challenged.

This is also a trait of the New York State Republican Party which is also apprently female challenged.

Such diversity, such talent– all of it in one gender.

Gerry O’Brien wants to talk about “alternate realities.”

    Let’s talk about some.

In an alternate reality, women and minorities wouldn’t be excluded from county positions, as they have been.

In an alternate reality, Gerry O’Brien would be a kind, beneficent political consultant who does not have allegations of theft and assault against him.

In an alternate reality, Marty Golden wouldn’t make secret deals with Democrats and openly endorse them either.

In an alternate reality, Marty Golden wouldn’t seek Berth Lewis’ counsel on Atlantic Yards.

In an alternate reality, Craig Eaton would banish the hate blogs and build bridges rather than burn them.

In an alternate reality, Craig Eaton would help candidates rather than let them wither away and fail.

In an alternate reality, Craig Eaton would be a semi-decent leader and not AWOL or completely incompetent, as he is in reality.

In an alternate reality, the Brooklyn GOP would support its candidates.

In an alternate reality, the Brooklyn GOP would care about more than Bay Ridge.

In an alternate reality, party benefits would go to the entire borough and not just Bay Ridge Cabal-related affiliates.

And my favorite: in an alternate reality, Gerry O’Brien and his fellow Bay Ridge Cabal members would be thin an attractive (“fat” chance).

Look, Gerry: you can imagine all you want. You’re cabal still is on the hook for this party’s failures and divisions. Grow up. Act like men (if that’s possible). And stop whining.

    Truth spoken.

In an alternate reality, Marty Golden would be a REAL Republican and would have thrown the obnoxious Easton under the bus a long time ago.

In an alternate reality, Bob Howe would probably be county chair and everyone would get along.

In an alternate reality, O’Brien would be losing races and screwing candidates in California where he failed so miserably a few years back.

The Jig response to Clorinda not knowing her history was at least slightly responsive.

They rebutted absolutely nothing, however gave examples, which if true, would make the point of “Clorinda Doesn’t Know Her History” more persuasive.

In any case, in addition, Clorinda Annarumo is an unrepentant serial hypocrite. She attacks people on ridiculous grounds while throwing her personal allegiance and clubs prestige behind others who have been “guilty” of exactly the same thing , usually for craven and/or mercenary reasons, or occasionally for petty jealousy and/or hateful revenge.

Case in point, Jim McCall never actually ran against Chris Mega. In 1980 McCall ran against John Gangemi for the chance to run against Chris Mega– Gangemi beat McCall, Mega beat Gangemi– that’s the real history. All were gentlemen throughout that campaign and there was never any recrimination since, until Clorinda’s recent view of history changed things.

In 1982 or 1984, the deceased wife of Joe English the current Chairman of the Board of Clorinda’s Club (who is now not well and in need of everyone’s prayers)– Ann English did run against Chris Mega. Clorinda specifically gave a significant memorial tribute to Ann English at one of her Seergy Club Award dinners– because Joe English was paying the freight for the Seergy Club at the time.

Clorinda– mercenary hypocrite? Yes you are.

Clorinda Annarumu, award yourself the Seergy Club Serial Hypocrite Award at your next club dinner.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Clorinda history can be a bitch– just like you.

Since only Clorinda cares about the DiCarlos a anymore, she definitely needs an intervention– historically speaking.

In his private office at the old Seergy Club on Seventh Avenue, Bob DiCarlo once told me that everybody who had been opposed to his becoming GOP leader in Brooklyn were pygmies in body, intellect and character. I think, Clorinda, you brought us coffee– but perhaps that was another time when I was there.

Dom and Bob Di Carlo, father and son– Clorinda you basked in their glory and you hoped that you reflected just a few of their rays. From your postings on the hate blogs, it seems that you still do. On your knees in homage, even now, waiting as if to be blessed with graces pouring out from a high tabernacle on some high altar.

Clorinda, get real. Those guys, who you thought were the great ones, they really weren’t worthy of much respect at all. Clorinda let me put it to you another way– the DiCarlos, father and son were both big in frame, but very small in character– they were the pygmies.

Most people remember Judge Dominick L. DiCarlo’s great honors and accomplishments, he certainly did have them. Unfortunately he turned out to be as hollow as his son Robert, who clearly is a twisted soul and is Dom DiCarlo’s living legacy to the world.

I remember a day in Federal Court– Judge Dearie presiding, big Bobby DiCarlo in the dock, expecting to extract victory from the jaws of defeat, so sure of himself. Judge Dearie came into the courtroom and Bobby baby smiled as Dearie went straight to the bench. Before he proceeded with the case, Judge Dearie had an announcement. He told everybody in court that at lunch one of his colleagues another federal judge had come over to his table to introduce his son. Judge Dearie said he seldom had reason to talk to the other judge and did not know him well at all, and he only said hello to the son to be polite and not cause a scene in the restaurant. He then turned to Robert Di Carlo, standing in the well, addressed him and told him to tell his father never to do anything like that again, or there would be consequences.

Clorinda, maybe you remember it, now that I’ve reminded you. Like son, like father– both very small in character, indeed. So enough about both of them, it demeans you to remind everybody from whence you came. Stop raking your trash for mementoes and brickbats.

To everybody else, please take note: Clorinda’s heros the DiCarlos, Dom and Rob– oversized ….over rated…..thoroughly over in the 49th AD. Robert DiCarlo was thrown out for good and for good reason a very long time ago and Clorinda Annarumo has been in denial ever since.

TJIUA and its main acolytes all have their knickers [Am.> “panties”] in a twist over the pounding that harridan, Clorinda Annarumo, is getting over her slovenly affection for the actually dead and morally dead DiCarlos and other less than perfect Republican office holders whose payrolls were padded by employing her meager talents in the good old days.

The point of my last post was that even the wonderful Dom DiCarlo attempted to corrupt the very court where he was employed, because of his affection for son Robert DiCarlo.

As to my use of the word “bitch”, I tried: “Clorinda history can be a harridan– just like you.” It just didn’t sing.

On the other hand: “Clorinda history can be a bitch– just like you.” I don’t think Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Francis Scott Key or Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald could improve on that.
