Brooklyn GOP Chairman Craig “The Irrelevant One” Eaton Publicly Declares War on the 49ers By Sending Political “Zimmermann Note”

May 30, 2010

He’s wanted to get this war started ever since it was clear the reformers would never bow to him.

In a recent letter sent to the poll workers of the 49th Assembly District, Brooklyn GOP Chairman Craig Eaton (aka “The Irrelevant One,” “The Duke of Bay Ridge”) uses bogus reasoning in condemning the District Leaders of the 49th Assembly District, in the first public indication of war from the Bay Ridge Cabal.

The letter is a clear attempt to promote divisions in the 49th Assembly District by hypocritically undermining its current district leaders and casting them in a negative light. This follows a recent letter from the 46th and 48th Assembly District Leaders, Mr. Eaton’s willing pawns, to 49th AD voters seeking to draw them away from the 49th AD club and snuff out that district’s Fiorello LaGuardia Club. The reason? Most likely Mr. Eaton’s Soviet-style tactics in crushing any and all Republicans who refuse to genuflect toward his Mecca of Political Failure, Bay Ridge.

Here is the letter:

From what we can ascertain, the letter was sent stealthily to avoid notice. But, of course, readers in the 49th brought the letter to our attention almost immediately.

We could not help but be reminded of the German Zimmermann Telegram to our southern neighbors inviting them to declare war on the United States in the event that the US did not remain neutral during the First World War.

You may recall the note:

We intend to begin on the first of February unrestricted submarine warfare. We shall endeavor in spite of this to keep the United States of America neutral. In the event of this not succeeding, we make Mexico a proposal of alliance on the following basis: make war together, make peace together, generous financial support and an understanding on our part that Mexico is to reconquer the lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The settlement in detail is left to you. You will inform the President of the above most secretly as soon as the outbreak of war with the United States of America is certain and add the suggestion that he should, on his own initiative, invite Japan to immediate adherence and at the same time mediate between Japan and ourselves. Please call the President’s attention to the fact that the ruthless employment of our submarines now offers the prospect of compelling England in a few months to make peace.” Signed, ZIMMERMANN.

Basically, Craig Eaton is seeking to split the politically active base of the 49th and bring them into his ranks using outright patronage as his carrot. He is encouraging the 49th’s allies to turn against them in the hopes of euthanizing the district’s leadership.

In other words, Mr. Eaton is attempting to buy off the politically-minded active Republicans in the 49th and persuade them to abandon the 49th AD Leaders Frederick Martorell and particularly Lucretia Regina-Potter, the stalwart anti-establishment Republican candidate.

To top it off, Mr. Eaton is also advising members not to pay dues to the Fiorello LaGuardia Club, which is currently chaired by former candidate for Chairman (Mr. Eaton’s competition, that is) Arnaldo Ferraro.

That’s right folks: a sitting GOP chairman is trying to euthanize a Republican club in his own county. Rather than extend an olive branch and seek peace (which 49th AD members have told us was never done), Mr. Eaton has decided to crush the 49th.

How mature.

If this weren’t Brooklyn and we weren’t dealing with creatures such as those in the Bay Ridge Cabal, I would be stunned. This is a brazen act that will only serve to weaken the party in a district that is one of the few pro-Republican districts in the entire city.

All to satiate Mr. Eaton’s undernourished ego, weakened by years of political irrelevance.

And Mr. Eaton is not at all interested in being even the slightest bit fair-minded. As the letter indicates, he will be giving out poll jobs (an authority typically delegated to the district leaders of an Assembly District) through a corrupt committee of lackeys and personal hacks, most notably Marc D’Ottavio, whose claim-to-fame was losing by over 90% of the vote to Marty Markowitz in the race for Brooklyn Borough President. These people will be his personal panel of hack-appointers, choosing poll workers not based on merit but on allegiance to The Duke of Bay Ridge and his posse.

I must say, I knew the Brooklyn GOP Revolution had begun:

But this is conduct is so outrageous, I think the fact is clear: Mr. Eaton and his gang of thugs have declared war.

And we know which side we’re on.

I while back I read Barbara Tuchman’s book about the “Zimmerman Telegram”.

There is a major difference between the German message and that of the scoundrel Craig Eaton. The German message was composed of 5-digit blocks in a numerical cipher that was then sent by normal telegraphic means. British Intelligence, under Admiral “Blinker” Hall broke the code and passed the word onto the Americans. The Germans always maintained that the message was never sent by them and that all of it was a fabrication by the Brits. Historians overwhelmingly accept the British version.

There is no code-breaking needed to “get” the meaning of Craig Eaton’s letter. Here we have the unscrupulous Craig Eaton in all of his unvarnished glory– too clever by half– for all the world to see.

It seems very funny to me – you all call Eaton irrelevant, yet he has such a grasp over each of you – you write about his every move, his personal life, his professional life and his political life. And, then you prove how relevant he is, by posting his letter, which in and of itself shows that he is indeed relevant, if the Law actually gives him control over the appointment of Inspectors.

In my humble opinion, posting the letter and writing about it, only gives him more power and proves he has power. You are eating right into his hands and publicizing his power for all to see.

What a terrible mistake you are making. I thought you guys at Atlas were smarter than this.

We appreciate your concerns, but Mr. Eaton is only relevant insofar as his overthrow is essential to the victory of reform in our party. There are some who believe that the party leadership should be ignored and is not worth fighting. But that would be an error. The fact is, if we want to see successful reform-minded candidates rise up in our borough, the Brooklyn GOP is the only choice between the two major parties to do so as things currently stand.

While locally, Republicans have given up on the party leadership, upstate Republicans still attach some relevance (however little) to the party organization. Penetrating the ranks of the statewide party and permeating it with a reform agenda depends on first gaining a foothold in Brooklyn. The only way to remedy the serious problems in New York State Government is to first reform the Brooklyn GOP.

Mr. Eaton is politically irrelevant because he has succeeded at nothing besides dividing the party into two classes: the lackey and the reformer.

Winning races and/or providing an actual message of reform would allow the Brooklyn GOP to be relevant again.

        That is our goal.

Is there a real person running around out there with a serious personality disorder calling themselves “DEDICATED REPUBLICAN”?

My guess is it’s somebody affiliated with Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn, or perhaps, a paid actor working for Arnaldo Ferraro. Clearly, the style (all caps– maniacal rage) was intended to mimic what was widely accepted to have been Craig Eaton’s postings back in the earlier days of this blog.

If it was all a lark, the “DEDICATED REPUBLICAN” tweet was a nice little bit of nostalgia.

If it was serious, and it wasn’t really Craig Eaton, I’m afraid that we are all in great danger of an incipient mass murderer about to come after all of us.

If it was serious, and it was Craig Eaton, it’s about par for the course; and we should go back to watching “Mork and Mindy” reruns….Nannu, Nannu!

Your letter that was re-printed by the Atlas folks was a classic “tell”.

Big meeting by Clorinda A and Elaine G at their club on the night of 5/27, then your big letter of 5/28. Looks like you didn’t draw the cards that you were hoping for on the 5/27.

I guess right now you’re still working on that “busted flush”; good luck with that on 6/5.

the Brooklyn Republican Party organization is being operated and run out of Chairman Eaton’s private law firm practice, Eaton & Torrenzano LLP, located at 1662 Sheepshead Bay Rd., Brooklyn, NY 11235 (which is the same address for the KCRP).

Mr. Eaton, Esq., was admitted to the NYS Bar in 1986. He has a firm partner, Jay Torrenzano, Esq., admitted in 1986. Both attended New York Law School in Manhattan.

The law practice specializes in personal injury, commercial and residential real estate and general business law.

Are the law firm’s clerical, white collar employees performing work for the KCRP?

Moreover, Chairman Eaton’s law firm partner, Jay Torrenzano Esq., financially supported candidate Obama in 2008, as per public election finance records.

Did Peter Cipriano speak at the Seergy Club on May 27th? Did any body hear him?

Does Peter Cipriano know that he’s running in the 49th AD not the 46th AD?

Is Peter Cipriano planning ever to go back to school?

Even though he was new there, Peter Cipriano seems to have run for student government at Catholic University. Did Cipriano get elected? If not, how badly did he lose.

Peter Cipriano is out of high school just a couple of years, but he says he did a lot of things while in high school. I have read about it. Maybe my research skills aren’t up to the job; but, on the other hand, maybe Peter Cipriano didn’t do as much as he has said.

As part of our due diligence, please, tell us again about the Catholic and Republican groups that Peter Cipriano set up at the High School for American Studies at Lehman College. Were these secret groups?

Please, have Peter Cipriano get back to us with just the facts by Friday.

The information uncovered by “Just Facts By Friday” is that after Peter Cipriano inflated his resume to run for CUA SAGA Representative for 2009-2010, he was selected to serve.

After he was elected what did this hardworking “Republican” do?

The only thing of note, appears to be that “Republican” Peter Cipriano named a prominent Democrat operative (active both in the New Jersey Democratic Party and in the CUA Student Democrats) to be a “Program Director” for a group intended to agitate to change how thigs would be done at Catholic University. This person also acted as the CFO of a 501(c)(3) advocay group in Washington D.C.

(Note: In the note regarding Cipriano’s Democratic nominee, the CUA SAGA webpage specifically refered to Peter Cipriano as “former SAGA delegate Peter Cipriano.” Altough it has not yet been confirmed, the very same Democrat activist appointed by Peter Cipriano to be the “Program Director of Southside Residents…” might have been selected to replace Peter Cipriano as CUA SAGA Representative for 2010-2011.)

There is still no reliable word whether Clorinda and Craig let Peter Cipriano speak at the Seergy Club on May 27th.

    June 21, 2010 8:41 pm

PETER ABBATE has been disclosed to be one of our elected representatives to the NYS State Legislature who has been consistently uncooperative with a non-partisan watchdog group trying to compare his election promises with his legislative performance in the Assembly.

    According to PROJECT VOTE SMART:

“Assembly Member Peter J. Abbate, Jr. repeatedly refused to provide any responses to citizens on the issues through the 2008 Political Courage Test when asked to do so by national leaders of the political parties, prominent members of the media and Project Vote Smart…”

Perhaps, Mr. Abbate believes that he shouldn’t be held accountable for what he says to his constituents in the 49th Assembly District.

Perhaps, Mr. Abbate believes that he shouldn’t be held accountable by his constituents in the 49th Assembly District for how he votes in Albany.

Perhaps, Mr. Abbate believes that nobody should be able to compare how he votes in Albany with what he says to his constituents in the 49th Assembly District.

That’s not how a free and open representative democracy is supposed to work.

That’s why real “Regime Change in the 49th AD” means that we have to dump Assemblyman Peter Abbate.

Only LUCRETIA gives Republicans a real shot at doing that in 2010.

ALBANY — The budget may be stalled, parks and schools may be closing but public employees might soon be able to take early retirement. ABBATE and SAVINO back it, so it must be a real give-away and means more taxes on you and your kids.

      Read more:

Peter Abbate’s formula to save money– give public employees an incentive to take early retirement– let them retire early without the current penalty. His rationale– it’ll get them off the payroll sooner and save lots of $$$$$.

Abbate, baby, won’t these retired workers need to be replaced?
If not, just furlough them right now without incentives– that’s what will really save money.

Even if there is a miniscule short-term saving (the same senior employee gets longevity pay that thenew junior emplyee doesn’t) the NYS Pension Fund runs out befor too long and pensions then come directly out of NYS revenue– that means a huge bill for the kids.

How about a little GENERATIONAL FAIRNESS! How about we save something for the future.

Where’s Marty Golden on this one?

Ask them all about it at State Senator Marty Golden’s “Let’s Elect All Democrats But Me Town Hall” on Tuesday, June 29 from 7:00- 9:00 PM, at St. Finbar’s Center, Bath Ave and 26 Bay 20th St. in Bensonhurst.

He made the identical proposal years ago– as a quiet add-on to a budget bill, with little explanation. It was a straight union deal.

  12. Correcting the Record on Marty Golden and "Regime Change" in the 49th AD permalink

The article “Entrenched warfare GOP battle not about beating Abbate” by Helen Klein, Tuesday, July 27, 2010 appeared in a variety of Brooklyn Paper, Courier-Life and other outlets. Unfortunately the article is chock full of factual errors because Ms. Klein reported and quoted material from the Golden-Eaton faction uncritically and without fact checking.

Republican County Leader Craig Eaton began his attempted onslaught against the 49th AD many months before any candidacies were announced for the 2010 elections. Early in 2010, the dictatorial tinker Eaton announced “Regime Change” against the 49th AD LaGuardia Club using the image of a Russian T-34 Tank, which was the main weapon that put down the Hungarian freedom-fighters in 1956. That heavy handed Soviet-style thuggery has been the hallmark of Craig Eaton and his hate blog, “The Jig is Up Atlas”, in their continuous attacks on the 49th AD Republicans.

For the record, the LaGuardia Club did not carry State Senator Marty Golden’s petitions for 2010 for the following reasons:
At a meeting of the LaGuardia Club Search Committee, Marty Golden:
    REFUSED to properly sign in;
    REFUSED to support the Republican Candidate for the Assembly in the 49th AD, selected according to rules of the Kings County Republican Party;
    REFUSED to support restoration of the 49th AD inspectors and coordinators making ageist and culturally insensitive remarks about the dropped 49th AD Board of Election’s workers ability to learn the new computer voting systems;
Demonstrated a complete LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND CANDOR concerning key pieces of legislation before one of his committees in the State Senate; and
ABRUPTLY DEPARTED before the search committee’s questioning was completed saying, “I’ve answered enough, I am a sitting State Senator, for [expletive] sake.”
As a result, Marty Golden failed his interview with the search committee of the LaGuardia Republican Club and his nomination was given a “not recommended” designation. Thereafter, Golden was neither nominated nor seconded by anyone at the general membership meeting that voted on nominations. No State Senate Candidate was carried by the 49th AD Club.

A comment by “Jaro…” correcting many of the errors listed above was briefly posted below Helen Klein’s article as it appeared in the “Your Nabe” blog, but it appears to have been deleted for some reason.
