Nephew of Golden Prince Arrested After Bloody Bar Brawl

April 10, 2010

Times are getting tough for The Golden Prince closer to home, it would seem, according to this recent post on The New York Times Webpage.

In it, it is revealed that the nephew of State Senator Marty Golden (aka The Golden Prince) has been arrested for his apparent involvement in a bar fight in Bay Ridge.

Here’s the story:

Two police officers and a firefighter, were injured early Saturday in what the authorities described as a fight that began in a bar in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

The violence broke out about 2:48 a.m. at the Kettle Black Bar, on the northwest corner of Third Avenue and 87th Street, according to the police.

It began, the police said, when a man punched an off-duty city police officer in the face, touching off a melee. The officer had been standing and talking with three friends — a man and two women — in the front near the bar, the police said.

As the fight spread, bouncers propelled many patrons out into the street.

An off-duty police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey went to help the other officer, a law enforcement official said. But though he identified himself as an officer, he was hit in the jaw, the official said.

Outside, an off-duty city firefighter, who had come to the bar with the Port Authority officer, was trying restore order when “someone takes a swipe at his arm,” with a knife, said the official, who spoke on the condition on anonymity because the case remained under investigation.

The officers and the firefighter were not immediately identified. The police said the injured firefighter and Port Authority officer were treated at Lutheran Medical Center. It was not clear how they arrived there.

More than 12 hours after the fight, detectives from the 68th Precinct had placed five people under arrest in connection with it, including John DeCarlo, 22, of Staten Island, who the police believe threw the initial punch.

Mr. DeCarlo was charged with assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, the police said.

None of the off-duty municipal workers were facing charges on Saturday, although investigators were still piecing together what happened and trying to pin down the roles played by each of those involved, the police said.

John Kelly, a spokesman for the Port Authority, said, “the matter is under investigation.” He declined further comment.

Along the street where the bar is located, detectives moved in and out of stores, speaking to merchants and others.
And two lawyers, who said they were representing the five arrested men were also on the street near the bar, detailing for reporters a slightly different account of what had occurred — including who got hit first.

The lawyers, Arthur Aidala and Michael Cibella, said their clients did not start the fight, but rather were attacked. They one of the arrested men, Kevin Crowley, a Marine, was in the bar with friends when he was hit in the head. Then, they said, the bouncers attempted to break up the fight by pushing Mr. Crowley and his friends outside while trying, unsuccessfully, to keep others inside.

“It’s our information that it’s going to take a long time to figure out what happened,” said Mr. Aidala, adding that Mr. Crowley had an injury to the front of his head. “This started out as a simple bar fight altercation that escalated when Mr. Crowley was hit over the head with a bottle.”

In addition to Mr. Crowley and Mr. DeCarlo, the lawyers identified a third client, Dan Golden, who they said was also facing charges. They said Mr. Golden is a nephew of State Senator Martin J. Golden, whose district includes Bay Ridge. The senator did not immediately return a call to his cellphone on Saturday.

Mike Anello, 26, a property manager, who said he was a friend of the firefighter, supported the firefighter’s version. Mr. Anello said he was in a back room of the bar when the fight broke out. Outside, he found the firefighter in the middle of the street with his shirt tied around his left arm to stanch the bleeding.

“And he was bleeding pretty bad,” Mr. Anello said. “He was screaming, ‘Get me to the hospital.’”

Mr. Anello said that although he did not see the fight begin, he spoke with the firefighter afterward and said the firefighter told him the fight began when someone hit the off-duty city officer with a beer bottle. He said the firefighter, who is 29, was, “just trying to help the off-duty cop.”

Elsewhere on the street, merchants said weekend nights were often punctuated by disorder and noise.

“Every weekend, fighting here,” said an employee of Buon Gusto Pizza, about a block and a half from the Kettle Black Bar. “It’s nothing new. Everybody fighting. Fighting, drinking and more fighting.

At Sunrise Farms, a grocery near the bar, Anthony Tome, a clerk, pointed to the aftermath of the fight: A large patch of blood on the corner of 86th Street and Third Avenue, and a woman’s red high-heeled shoe lying idle on the curb.

Inside the bar, which was decorated with flowers and balloons for a baby shower, a bartender denied that any trouble had occurred.

“This is just some bad rumor,” said the bartender, who declined to identify himself.

On Saturday, the police had not identified the four men, besides Mr. DeCarlo, who had been arrested, but said they would likely face charges of menacing.
They added that two knives had been recovered: One from the floor inside the bar and one outside, near Mr. DeCarlo’s feet.

In February, two firefighters were charged with riot and misdemeanor assault in connection with a fight in January at the Salty Dog, another Day Ridge bar. Three men were severely injured in that episode.

I guess it’s true what they’re saying: crime is going up in the city (forgive me, I couldn’t resist 😉 too easy to go after Bloomberg).

Let’s hope whoever is innocent is exonerated and the true culprits are brought to justice.

It should be noted that Senator Golden is a former police officer. One hopes no special treatment is given to Mr. Golden due to his relationship with the Senator.

Fair is fair.

As a lifelong resident of what was once the most beautiful and exclusive area of Brooklyn, I am embarassed and ashamed to tell people that I live in Bay Ridge. My neighborhood has become run down and seedy. It is overrun with drunkards who brawl all weekend and no one does anything about it. The bars are too concerned about making money and will serve anyone regardless of their condition. The local politicians are more concerned about kayaking than the people who live here and it shows. We will show them the door on election day.

I’ve been mugged twice in Bay Ridge. Both times by different people I have never met before. Bay Ridge has become a terrible place and, clearly, our politicians are to blame for the change in culture and lax laws.
I’m not interested in “uniting” the GOP in Brooklyn if Republicans aren’t acting like REPUBLICANS.

The way to change all that is to register more voters Republican.

I mean don’t get me wrong, he was feeding her three square a day (three hots and a cot, as they say) and was letting her watch all the Price is Right she could stomach but still…

Re: Pounding and other Blood Sport

The Kings County Republican Leadership, let’s call that “Craig Eaton”, since they still seem to love him as their alpha-dog, and State Senator Martin Golden, since he is the only elected Republican exclusively from Brooklyn, have chosen to “pound” by various manner and means any non-compliant Republicans that might pop up— ie., engage in politics as “Blood Sport”.

Since Marty Golden, the guy, is the apparent real party in interest, one would have thought he’d have stopped the madness long ago, he’s an incumbent State Senator with all kinds of business going on, and all manner of skeletons in and out of closets in the family, on the road and on the job. He hasn’t stopped the madness, because — well, I really don’t know why.

Maybe Krauss, O’Brien, Kassar, Mike Long, Vito Lopez and/or some other Democrats, the DiMarzio Diocesan Crowd, who knows (certainly somebody other than errand boy Craig Eaton) has suggested some kind of new alignment that required supporting David Greenfield, and now the elimination of the 49th A.D. Regular Republican Organization. At any rate somebody or everybody from that crowd has been pounding away for quite a while now, and Marty Golden has gone along with it. So it’s his, his kiddies broke it, he has to pay for it. It’s simple , it’s straightfoward.

In “End the Madness” or anybody else’s wildest dreams do they think that the opposition response would have gone something like this:

“….Arnaldo: Jonathan, you see what they are doing to you and to the rest of us up here in the 49th since that Lazar-Greenfield fiasco.

Jonathan: But they looked bad too. Remember, Marty Golden endorsed Greenfield, first, even after I had put my hat in the ring.

Arnaldo: You’re right about Golden, but they really don’t care how they look. Look, now, they just fire people from their jobs— they don’t care. They make public deals with the Democrats— they don’t care. They make up their own rules to pick candidates— they don’t care. They throw out your real Young Republicans and make up their own— they don’t care. It goes on and on and they don’t care.

Jonathan: I know, it looks like I didn’t plan ahead for this. However, Arnaldo, you can tell Lucretia and Fred, and the others that I have cunning and clever plan.

Arnaldo: Am I jumping the gun, Jonathan, or are the words “I have a cunning and clever plan” intruding with ill-deserved confidence into this conversation?

Jonathan: They certainly are, sir! But now with deserved confidence, I assure you.

Arnaldo: Well, forgive me if I don’t do a cartwheel of joy. Your record in this department is hardly 100%. So what is this cunning and clever plan?

    Jonathan: We do nothing.

Arnaldo: Ah, yes, Jonathan, that certainly sounds like another world-beater.

Jonathan: No, wait. We do nothing… until our heads have actually been cut off and they complete their evil plans.

Arnaldo: Ah, and then we… spring into action?

Jonathan: Exactly, with proof that Eaton and Golden and their friends and supporters are bad people we can run against them again in 2011, but in the meantime we’ll register lots of new Republican voters and find more new Young Republicans.

Arnaldo: Ah, since you put it that way, then that’s what we’ll certainly do, because “End the Madness” and others on the sidelines think that anything else is the wrong thing for the Republican party or something.”

You see this is just like a scene from The Black Adder episode “Nob and Nobility”— it’s foolhardy and farcical.

We are being pounded by Eaton and Golden and the others, right now— so, the answer is not to do nothing. We pound back, now in 2010—on various blogs, and soon enough, elsewhere with literature, maybe advertising. Nonetheless, as a tip of the hat to “End the Madness”, any good primary campaign means registering new voters, so we’ll do that too.

In 2010 more than anybody else, Golden has something to lose— he’s the one who really needs the cunning and clever plan….maybe he can try to end the madness.

    Good Luck with that, Marty!!!!

The Jig is Up Atlas lists as its current members: “AAA”; “Judas Judge”; “BrooklynPolitico” and “TheJigisUpAtlas– Administrator”. Something has changed over there in the last few days.

Last night on into the wee-hours of the AM on April 11th, there was a brutal blog fire-fight or a good old fashioned pissin’contest. It was full of the usual adolescent “yo’ mother”-type invective with descriptions of various sexual aids and positions by the antagonists. This is certainly not the beginning of a new age of debating societies making use of the digital highway; it’s more like a bad Friday night in the school yard after the beer ran out and the bottles of Thunderbird or Irish Rose had made their third or fourth go round and held more spit than cheap wine.

Maybe, under such circumstances the vomiting part could be viewed as a good thing. Well then, maybe, last night’s TJIUA exchange could similarly be viewed as a good thing.

Why can’t we learn to get along?

    End The Meanness 2

State Senator’s Nephew 1 of 5 Arrested After Bay Ridge Bar Brawl

NEW YORK (1010WINS) — Five men were arrested for attacking two cops and a firefighter Saturday in a bar-room brawl according to the Daily News.

The fight occured at a Bay Ridge bar called, The Kettle Black, and involved a police officer, a firefighter,a Port Authority police officer, and a number of bar patrons including Daniel Golden, the nephew of Brooklyn state Sen. Marty Golden.

Attorneys for the arrested men tell 1010 WINS that the incident inside the bar is unclear. Michael Cibella, representing former-marine Kevin Crowley, says his client was hit over the head with a beer bottle.

Cibella also says it wasn’t until bar broke up the fight and escorted the five friends out of the bar that the cops and firefighters chased them.

The arrested: John Decarlo, 26, of Staten Island; Michael Crowley, 20, of Brooklyn; Kevin Crowley, 23, of Brooklyn; Daniel Golden, 23, of Brooklyn; and Peter Jung, 23, of Brooklyn.

Well well well isn’t funny how on the other blog they always bring up the incident between Arnaldo’s son and the off duty cop. I guess you can say its now like the pot calling the kettle black, oh I mean the “kettle black bar” that is. For those of you who do not know by now it seems that not one , not two, not three, but four of the greatest state senator who ever lived in New York Marty Golden’s Nephews were involved in a brawl at the kettle black bar in Bay Ridge, Where at least one off duty officer got a bottle smashed over his head. Wow nice family senator Golden why are they making our boys in blue into our boys in red, not nice. Oh just like our great chairman of the New York State Republican Party Ed cox’s father in law President Nixon, there seems to be a cover up like water Gate. Or shall I say Golden Gate . Yea apparently when a technician for vanguard computer systems a local company that maintains the bar’s video surveillance capabilities handed over a doctored copy of the video to the detectives. The detectives noticed that the date time stamp on the video jumped out of sequence, indicating a portion of the action from inside the bar was deleted. Maybe we need to look into whether or not vanguard received any grants from Senator Golden or how much money did the owner of vanguard donate to the Golden Campaign. Wow just like Nixon it wasn’t the crime that brought down his administration but the cover up. Maybe the cover up here will bring down the Senatorship of our greatest state senator that ever lived according to AAA. Stay tuned for more developments on Golden Gate it should be fun . Good bye for now.

A bunch of guys got into a bar fight at the Kettle Black in Bay Ridge last week. “No biggey”, one would think, even if their were some aggravating factors, like a little “blood on the floor” and cops being involved. No body died or even needed a significant stay at a hospital. Good old fashioned fun in Bay Ridge in the old days.

What’s making this bigger than the usual local 24-hour news cycle story, with the usual “if it bleeds it leads” follow-up in the local weeklies was the fact that four of the participants were relatives of the local State Senator, Marty Golden. Supposedly because of that, the Brooklyn DA, Charles Hynes, is reported to have taken a pass on participating in the prosecution of the bar-fighters who had been arrested and charged by the police. A spokesman for the District Attorney claimed that since Hynes and the State Senator Martin Golden both lived in Bay Ridge, and had both personal and professional relationships, the DA would seek to have an out-of-county prosecutor appointed. In fact, the DA’s calling for the appointment of a “Special Prosecutor” was the UNUSUAL headline for the follow-up weekly report of the “3rd Avenue Melee” (at the Kettle Black) that appeared in the Bay Ridge HOME REPORTER newspaper this week.

The Kettle Black fight story gained additional legs with the arrest of a technician from a local computer store. It has been alleged that a tape from the surveillance system at the Kettle Black was tampered with by an employee of another Bay Ridge business, whose owner had prior associations with the State Senator. This suppoesedly happened some time after the fight with the off-duty cops involving the Senator’s nephew and cousins. The odd twist is that the technician himself supposedly knew one of the police officers involved in the fight, and now Police Internal Affairs is supposedly investigating that connection. Curiouser and curiouser!

My overall question is a simple one— why did DA Charles Hynes take a pass on this case? The State Senator Golden wasn’t in the fight, so why do any of his relationships with Hynes (whatever they might involve) make a differenceat all? As we say in Bay Ridge, “We’re just talkin’ a nephew and some cousins, here— don’t that include almost everybody?”

Did the Brooklyn DA just want to avoid having to handle a hot potato involving an old bud, like Marty Golden? Maybe, Hynes knew that Golden or somebody higher than GOlden would surely become involved. Maybe, Hynes saw that ultimately the case would get more complicated and might involve prosecuting the police officers and others for tampering with the evidence in the case? Maybe it’s something else completely.

Meanwhile, a bunch of Bay Ridge guys and a few others who were mixed up little more than some rough-and-tumble at a Bay Ridge bar, are in a case that seems to grow like Topsey.
