The Best of Atlas: Atlas Contributors Choose their Favorite Posts of 2009 – John Galt

December 31, 2009

To be honest, I can’t possibly choose the “best” post of 2009 for Atlas and not say that such a choice is impossible to make. So much of the work of my colleagues has been spectacular, highly amusing, and a joy to read. They have kept Atlas readers entertained and asking for more, and for that, I tip my hat to them.

Now, I could have given the honor of best post to Francisco D’Anconia, who, by all accounts, is the most read Brooklyn Republican online. His posts have garnered a huge percentage of our many tens of thousands of unique hits overall, and, gosh-darn it, he ends out our first year (as of today) with the top two posts in Atlas’ short history, both of which were published this month! Wow!

I could have honored Midas Mulligan, whose contributions since he joined our organization have been stellar and extremely well-read. My dearest Dagny Taggart had herself had an excellent end of the year with one of the top five posts about the Bay Ridge GOP’s Holiday Party.

But I must say that Hank Rearden earned my pick for best post of 2009: The Shore Road Syndrome. I have to say that at the end of the day, money talks. It has been the financial dealings of the Brooklyn GOP that have been extremely telling to me. It has indicated their priorities, their goals (or lack thereof) and their perception of what’s important. It highlights the Bay Ridge groupthink against which all reform must battle in the borough. We must be mindful of that fact as we enter the new year.

The Shore Road Syndrome: Brooklyn GOP Expenditures Benefit Bay Ridge, Eaton, and Golden

by Hank Rearden

I have been compiling some numbers, and the evidence is clear that the Brooklyn GOP and its Chairman, Craig “The Duke of Bay Ridge” Eaton, have benefited only organizations that are in Bay Ridge or that have a connection to The Duke or his Golden Prince, Sen. Martin Golden. This follows on the heels of an email sent out by The Duke indicating his decision to put all pre-election Brooklyn GOP events in and around the Bay Ridge area, which Francisco D’Anconia reported earlier this week.

It is now beyond a shadow of a doubt that the party and its leadership have and will continue to maintain a Bay Ridge-centric attitude and thus have forsaken the rest of the borough.

Let’s get to the numbers.

Let’s start with our selfless Chairman’s Golden Prince. This July, around when Eaton was gearing up to be Chairman, a sweet sum of $1650 landed in the lap of FRIENDS OF MARTY GOLDEN. That, of course, raises additional conflict of interest questions and whether Eaton made a deal with Golden to receive his endorsement for Chairman. We already know Golden has received nearly 20k from Eaton in the past decade, which heightens the controversial donation, especially in a year when the Senator is not even running for re-election.

Now, excuse me for asking, but why would you give so much money to The Golden Prince, who already has millions in the bank, when you have candidates that desperately need money? I guess their elections don’t mean as much as stuffing Golden’s piggy bank.

Next, vile as it may be to our readers, the party did direct over $2000 to sometimes Republican Party Warlock Gerry O’Brien, The Merlin of Malice, who has seemingly disappeared in the wake of Eaton’s victory… This blog called for an investigation of O’Brien and the immediate termination of all contact with him until his summer activities were investigated. That has not yet happened. The Duke and his wizard have been very close since his first election, which makes this sum all the more vomit-inducing.

Next, we have a hefty $26,870.50 spent at the El Caribe Country Club in Mill Basin, another organization with a tie to The Golden Prince.

More disgusting is nearly $10,500 spent at the Bay Ridge Manor, which is owned by the Golden Family. Why not just give 10k to FRIENDS FOR MARTY GOLDEN, Duke?

Continuing with Bay Ridge organizations and venues, the party gave over $1000 to the Bay Ridge Community Council. That’s nice.

What about the rest of Brooklyn?

ST. MARK’S R.C. CHURCH received $1,150 in February 2009. St. Marks Church happens to be within a block of The Duke’s law firm, Eaton & Torrenzano. His firm also happens to be the listed headquarters of the party (which raises its own issues). Of all the churches in Brooklyn, this is the one Eaton chooses.

Shocker.

You should know, this church recently honored The Golden Prince for his “service.” One cannot believe this donation was not a factor in that.

Next comes a BIG name. HEARTSHARE HUMAN SERVICES OF NEW YORK received a cozy $2000 from the party. Heartshare is a very familiar name to those that have been following Marty Golden over the past few years. In fact, the Heartshare-Golden-Eaton triangle is such a big story, it requires its own post. Nevertheless, you should know that Chairman Eaton sits on the Board of this not-for-profit (well, I guess that’s what it’s technically called) and The Golden Prince’s brother is, too.

No conflicts of interest there! I mean, none of this smells fishy at all

They wish.

Now, what about our Brooklyn schools? Well, of all the schools to benefit in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn GOP’s charity goes toward a local Shore Road stronghold: Xaverian High School. One would think with all of the money The Golden Prince has given Xaverian in the past few years, the Bay Ridge Cabal would consider, to coin a phrase, “spreading the wealth around” to other parts of the borough.

No way.

***

In spite of this Bay Ridge bonanza, we also have to consider our party’s ability to step up to the plate for our local candidates. Well, there is even some bad news for current City Council Candidate Bob Capano in all of this. While the party gave Capano, a candidate from Brooklyn, around $1000 last year, they gave The Bronx GOP over a third more this March than he received from the party.

Guess that party isn’t interested in supporting its own candidates…big surprise.

What a recipe for failure.

***

The fact is the party has been suffering from a Shore Road syndrome since Eaton has taken the reigns of the party. The numbers are only part of the story. The mentality of the party’s leaders and the conflicts of interest currently abound are innumerable.

This party has a great distance to go before it gets back to its feet, my friends.

Much of that distance lies outside of Bay Ridge.

Chairman Eaton apparently has not realized that fact. He probably doesn’t want to.

Happy New Year from Atlas to all of you! Thanks to the tens of thousands of people that have come to visit our blog since this past summer. I hope we can continue to shed light on the practices of our party, stimulate change, and bring about reform in the coming year!

Thank you Atlas writers! Thank you for the toughtful, intelligent, candid analysis and excellent articles.

If there is actual reform within the Brooklyn Republican Party it will be because Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn set that foundation for positive, productive change.

Keep up the excellent, innnovative, groundbreaking work!

You – the Atlas team of clever, brilliant writers – have been an inspiration these past 6 months. You have “sowed the seeds” of unequivocal transformation and effective change for the Kings County GOP.

Thank you for being who you are – for sharing your talents with the rest of us. For agitating reform and accountability in the Brooklyn GOP.

The clown known as Joseph Hayon is a chronic spammer! This pathetic, laughable, ludicrous person ought to be banished from A S in B.

I hope Mr. Hayon’s New Year’s Resolution is to get a brain enema. Not literally speaking… but this clown’s useless attempts at adding anything constructive – verbally, intellectually or otherwise, to the GOP Reform movement has continually hit “a dead end on a one way street” to nowhere. Capescia?

Sorry Joseph…it’s not personal but really….think about it. Maybe you can contribute your unique erudition and profound insight to UrbanElephants.com

I’m sure Jay and Dan of UE fame would enjoy what you have to say.

Regarding the Schism within the Brooklyn Republican Party,

I think Atlas’s goals are beginning to bear fruit. If something or someone does “bears fruit,” it produces successful results.

As 2009 closes it seems that the Bay Ridge Republican Party is attempting to to put more “meat” on the Brooklyn GOP website.

    See these new pages:

    http://brooklyngop.com/?page_id=43

    http://brooklyngop.com/?page_id=36

Be careful about this page/link below. The Party is asking for donations. Your contributions may end up supporting the Bay Ridge Manor again!

    http://brooklyngop.com/?page_id=38

Three ways to get in touch with the Brooklyn Republicans.

    http://brooklyngop.com/?page_id=40

The link on the above page to the NYC Board of Elections is not working properly. That figures that Craig Eaton and Co. did not test each of the links on the “upgraded” website for accuracy and “linkability.”

On the “new and improved BrooklynGOP.com website, Craig and Co. has a link to the Brooklyn GOP facebook page. I think Gene B. might be one of the “admins” for the Brooklyn GOP Facebook site.

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=53265716428

Last….the Brooklyn GOP didn’t include a link to the Brooklyn YR’s, which was deliberate. Therefore, you can see that link on Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn or by going to:

    http://www.brooklynyr.com

Olga, since your a Joseph Hayon fan, he has a website too! I was hoping to make a shidduch!

Anyway, Joseph Hayon is running for Congress! He’s hoping to butt heads with Congressman Weiner.

Three ways to get in touch:

      Email Us: info@brooklyngop.com = Doesn’t work.

Write Us: 1662 Sheepshead Bay Road, Brooklyn, NY 11235 = Eaton and Torrenzano (which means it probably gets shredded)

Call Us: 718-332-5796 = yeah right. Everyone knows Craig Eaton doesn’t answer phone calls. He makes them when he wants to. All he wants to do is “talk,” until the time actually comes to “talk.” Then, he can’t be reached.

Nothing new here. Just the same old, same old.

This pathetic bit of language is to be found on the Brooklyn GOP’s website:

The County Committee runs the Republican Party in Brooklyn. Each member is selected from an area of about three city blocks, and is the GOP’s local leader.

Committee members get to choose County Officers, including the Chairman.

There is a brief meeting every two years, but County Committee members can vote by mail, and do not have to physically attend.

There are no dues, and membership is open to any enrolled Republican voter.

WOW, THIS IS HOW YOU SELL COUNTY COMMITTEE? TRAGIC…

Russell Gallo and Kings County Republican Party Chair Craig A. Eaton are together and, in all honesty, part of the problem in our party. Our party is adrift without an oar. We need serious leadership changes, and these individuals must go, in my own opinion.

The protectionist ideology of the Bay Ridge Cabal is poisoning our boroughwide party, and it will fail unless the external leaders that have been alienated by the party move to consolidate and unify their precincts and grow the party outside the current broken leadership.

What we need are more clubs and more non-establishment leaders that are not beholden to the Golden/Eaton ideology of Bay Ridge centrality. We need leaders from all areas of Brooklyn. Other than paying lip service, the party has not done that. All they can do is go onto a blog and whine about how they are being criticized, when, in fact, THEY CHOSE to be in the positions they have and their own actions have demanded that scrutiny be placed on their leadership.

Those who are not inside the Brooklyn GOP, who fail to understand its ragtag workings, will not be able to appreciate the gravity of the crises we face in Kings County.

Dagny, what about a new poll on Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn asking this particular, pertinent question:

In order to prevent any more conflicts of interest or even the appearance of such conflicts of interests, should Craig A. Eaton Esq., relocate his law firm, Eaton and Torrenzano LLP, from 1662 Sheepshead Bay Road, Brooklyn, NY 11235, which is the Kings County Republican Committee Headquarters?
