As Thousands Are Given to Merlin of Malice O’Brien, Dark Shadow Rests Over Failed Capano Campaign

December 12, 2009

Well, the numbers are in, and it looks like our old friend Gerry O’Brien, the Brooklyn GOP’s Party Warlock, made out very well from the recent local elections.

Despite delivering any tangible results we can see, O’Brien was given thousands of dollars by City Council candidate Bob Capano in his failed run against incumbent Vincent Gentile.

This is all indicative of the nauseating relationships Capano has had with controversial political consultants, another being Dr. Jeffrey Kraus.

Moreover, the cast of characters that surrounded Capano during his campaign highlights entirely what the serious problems within our party.

Here are the numbers:

All told, over $10,000 was paid to the Merlin of Malice, who has been the subject of much scrutiny on Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn.

To put that in perspective, that’s over half the total sum of donations The Duke of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn GOP Chairman Craig Eaton, gave to State Senator Martin Golden during his entire decade-long tenure as a Republican.

O’Brien was already in hot water prior to the elections.

In his piece Dark Cloud of Party In Fighting Overshadows 39th City Council District Primary, Francisco D’Anconia detailed the shocking allegations regarding O’Brien’s summer doings, which included allegations of fraud, theft, and, most seriously, assaulting Brooklyn Young Republican President Jonathan Judge (who was recently impersonated on Atlas by Capano’s campaign manager Russell Gallo).

This was indicative of how Brooklyn GOP political consultants have gone without check in our party.

For example, The Daily News reported this past summer that Dr. Jeffrey Kraus, Chair of the NYC Voter Assistance Commission and long-time courtier of The Golden Prince, State Senator Marty Golden, publicly slandered Republican candidate for Public Advocate Alex Zablocki on YouTube.

Mr. Kraus is a Democrat.

We emailed Chairman Eaton in mid-September expressing our concern and outrage over this behavior:

Dear Chairman Eaton,

As a reader of our blog, we here at Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn felt the need to write to you on behalf of your concerned constituents regarding the course of conduct that some of the political consultants that have been paid by the Kings County Republican Party have been demonstrating.

Most recently, on the Urban Elephants blog, a letter from Brooklyn Young Republican Club President Jonathan Judge to the party’s Executive Committee was leaked disclosing a harassment complaint and allegations on the part of Mr. Judge that he was physically harassed and threatened by political consultant Gerry O’Brien, a sometimes-Democratic consultant with clear conflicts of interests, despite the fact that the county party has provided him thousands of dollars.

Also, last week, Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn exposed the party’s financing of another consultant that has received thousands from Republicans and serves as Chair of the NYC Voter Assistance Commission, Dr. Jeffrey Kraus, who publicly insulted the Republican Party’s candidate for Public Advocate Alex Zablocki.

We write to offer you an opportunity as the current party Chairman to examine these and other corruptions that have been plaguing your county party and that are gaining attention among your fellow constituents and elsewhere. This kind of conduct is reprehensible and needs to be extricated from our party or else the Republican Party as we know it will finally cease to exist in Brooklyn.

We invite you to send us your findings so we may post them and begin to shed some light on this issue. Your voice has been missing from this discussion, and it should be heard.

We have not heard nor are we aware of any pending investigation into either O’Brien or Kraus and their actions, but we know Mr. Capano sure didn’t seem to mind O’Brien’s help or the aid of this Democratic political consultant Kraus.

Besides the thousands to O’Brien, Mr. Capano enlisted the help of Kraus in his campaign, as well.

In his piece Bob Capano Enlists Anti-Zablocki Democrat Kraus to Get Out The Vote, Francisco alerted to you that Kraus was assisting him in his campaign activities. It was and remains unclear if Kraus had been involved from the beginning. You may recall this all came just days after the party released email and newspaper endorsements for all candidates except citywide Public Advocate Candidate Zablocki, whom, as was stated, Kraus had previously insulted online.

***

This web of political dirty tricks and tactics is very clear when you stop and look at how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

You have to ask yourself: just what the heck is going on here?

At the center of the web is Capano, whose campaign serves as a link between all of these characters: O’Brien, Kraus, and Gallo. Why would Mr. Capano choose these individuals to help him in any venture, let alone a political campaign? What kind of judgment does that demonstrate?

***

Alright, let’s recap.

– O’Brien has still not been brought to heel or been investigated, it appears. It looks like he has been working for the party even as late as Halloween. Rather than take a stand and demonstrate independence from such a thug, Capano continued to endorse his actions by giving him thousands.

– Kraus remains a mystery in Brooklyn GOP politics. He has not been reprimanded in any way for his vile behavior (and we’ve heard rumors that he is still keeping close to The Golden Prince and The Duke of Bay Ridge). Capano rewarded his behavior against Zablocki by maintaining Kraus in his campaign.

– Gallo, who was already in hot water for threatening “regime change” in the 49th Assembly District, has disappeared from the scene after Atlas established he did indeed impersonate Young Republican President Judge.

– Finally, you have Capano, who received far fewer votes than the prior candidate who challenged Gentile in his district had received on election day.

What a fabulous set of political misfits.

It is this opera of characters and their nonsense that is paradigmatic of what’s wrong with the Brooklyn GOP. Be it ego, hubris, thuggery, or possible criminality, the Brooklyn GOP is plagued by individuals who sully our great party and remain blights on our principled mission of reform.

And, of course, the captain of the sinking vessel, Chairman Eaton, is undoubtedly responsible for this circus we currently have.

***

What ever happened to holding officials accountable for their actions?

What ever happened to Republican values in this borough?

Where are the decent, principled men and women of our party ready to take the reigns of power away from these political thieves of our success?

You, my fellow reformers, are the antidote to these ills. You, my fellow reformers, are the cure for our party’s disease.

Only you can change this party.

But if our party is going to experience any kind of reform, these children must be expelled from positions of authority in the Brooklyn GOP.

That is the truth.

Dr. Kraus and Mr. O’Brien are low lives who masquerade as Republicans merely to pocket cash.

    Their Golden Rule?

    Self Above All Else.

The grotesque web of impropriety surrounding these men is stunning.

They need to be removed, surgically, if necessary, from the Brooklyn GOP.

All those people who theoretically didn’t vote for Capano due to his alleged dealings with these thugs (including Gallo–Mr. “Regime Change”) have now been vindicated.

Thank you for putting it all together, Midas.

What we need is a new party organization, one that is made up of those that have worked hard but been excluded for either being too good and thus a threat or not subservient enough and thus uncontrollable.

We need a broad coalition of Republicans, both young and old, that can raise money, get candidates useful tools and put feet on the ground all while endorsing principles of respect and renewal while banishing patronage from the vocabulary of the Brooklyn GOP.

It can be done. It will be done.

As to the “Craig Eaton Alert”—you’ve either buried your lead or you’ve stepped on it.

We’ve had some publishing problems here at “The Banner”—unions, Ellsworth Toohey’s henchmen, but we’re back, for now.

First and foremost, is O’Brien working on Eaton’s public relations? Is this Krauss picking where the Republican Party makes its expenditures–specifically charitable donations? I doubt it.

Now to the Eaton Alert— Let’s get this St. Marks thing straight. Eaton uses Republican money to make a donation to St. Marks, from which he was an alumnus, and within whose parish boundaries he has the office of his legal practice [recently used as the address of the Kings County Republican Party] and that makes him a member of the St. Marks “distinguished alumni”? What next, selling indulgences?

Aren’t all of Eaton’s donations of Republican funds to his pet charities simply conversion of those funds to his private use? What are the responsibilties of KCRP Treasurer and Financial Secretary and the rest of the executive committee in all of this?

Why not sue them all? Where are my lawyers when I need them?

Where are the “independent Republican” lawyers?

Did the Brooklyn GOP membership get this e-mail from the Kings County Republican Party Headquarters?

Why is it posted on Urban Elephants a day before the event (rally)? Was this “news release” broadcast on the brooklyngop.com website?

In fact, it looks like there a new problems with the Brooklyn GOP website. It won’t load anymore. Did the “Duke of Bay Ridge” take it down? Or is Mr. “wait until the last minute to broadcast a news release involving the Craig A. Eaton-Bay Ridge self-interest mob. They are a disgrace!

“The dearth of leadership in the county party, starting with its illustrious Chairman Craig Eaton—The Duke of Bay Ridge, Formerly of the Democratic Party (or so rumor has it)—is evident to all who take less than a minute to consider the “successes” of the Kings County Republican Party during the tenure of its present host of troglodytes. The illustrious Chairman—Primate of the Church of Political Failure—and his minions—the sad, lowly serfs of his empty promise agenda—have engaged in a systematic policy of intimidation and political thuggery that has alienated current Republicans and prospective Republicans even more. As a result, we are facing one of the worst periods our local party has ever faced.”

He can be such a Grinch this time of year. Every reformer should watch out. Their Christmas feasts and decorations might be missing after Gerry cashes the checks from Capano’s campaign and goes on a rampage lol

The Brooklyn GOP leadership hates reform, change, selflessness…hey, isn’t that everything Christmas is about?

Well, at the very least, I can only guess it will be a warm, food-filled Christmas at the O’Brien household this year…can’t say anything about the Christmases to come, now that Brother O’Brien is under scrutiny lol.

Maybe he’ll finally stop being a Grinch because of you guys!

Craig: Bob, you failed the party. You failed. It’s your fault. I didn’t want to see you before–espacially after those EXPLETIVE Atlas Shruggers EVALUATED YOU FOR MY JOB!!!!!!!!–but even more so now!

Bob: But, uh, Craig, I poured out my life to this party. I’ve been a good little acolyte. I’ve followed the code! I did what the party leaders said–

Craig: Not enough. You know, I did MORE than you did when I was running for office, you scum.

Bob: –Uh, Craig, you never ran for office…

    (Cricket Cricket Cricket)

Craig: Russell!!!!!!!! TAKE THIS GUY OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!

    Russell: Yessir!!!!!!!!!!

Craig: Oh, and by the way, Russell, I don’t think the party will be requiring your services anymore.

    Russell: What?! Why?!

Craig: Because–YOU FAILED!!!!!! IT’S YOUR FAULT, TOO!!!!!!!!

    Russell: But Craig…after all I…the things I did……….for you–

    Craig: IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!

Russell: But, I insulted women for you…I supported your failed chairmanship for a second term……I bent over backwards……..I even commented on that Atlas blog–

Craig: DON’T MENTION THOSE PUNKS TO ME!!!!!!

Russell: I did so many things I’m ashamed of—-JUST FOR YOU, and now you’re just throwing me away????????

    Craig: ……..

    Craig: Uh, YES.

Russell: (Cries while holding Capano in a headlock)

Bob: You see, this is how the party treats us–like crap.

Craig: You DON’T GET IT–YOU’RE EXPENDABLE. I DON’T ANY OF NEED YOU.

    Russell: (Sobbing) But–Craig–there’s–no one left–but people–like–us–

Craig: I don’t care!!!!! I DON’T CARE!!!!!!! IF IT’S JUST ME AND MARTY, THAT’S FINE!!!!! WE’RE ALL THAT MATTER IN THE GOP ANYWAY. NOW GET OUT YOU FAILURES!!!!!!!!!!!
