New York Post: Capano’s Race “Last Gasp of the GOP in Bay Ridge?”

October 31, 2009

Earlier this week, The New York Post put out an article discussing the closely watched race between Vincent Gentile and Bob Capano for CIty Council. The title of the piece, Last gasp of the GOP in Bay Ridge?, indicates just what might be on the line for the GOP in this election and what is in store for the party if they lose…

Here’s the article:

The battle between a Democratic incumbent and a Republican upstart isn’t just a race for Bay Ridge’s Council seat — it’s a litmus test for conservatives in the borough’s longtime right-wing stronghold.

In the so-called “Fray by the Bay,” one-time grocer, longtime community activist, and current adjunct professor Bob Capano is attacking Councilman Vince Gentile (D–Bay Ridge) for his sometimes adversarial relationship with the mayor, his allegiance to slush-fund-tarnished Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and even the recent reduction in garbage basket pick-ups on commercial streets.

“The previous councilman funded twice-a-day basket pickups on our local avenues — Gentile did not continue that, and our streets are more dirty as a result,” said Capano, a one-time staffer toscandal-scarred former Rep. Vito Fossella (R–Bay Ridge) as well as Borough President Markowitz.

The Republican candidate is also going after Gentile for not hosting a single town hall meeting throughout his seven years in office.

“The councilmember’s main job is to work with city agencies to make sure that they deliver for his constituents, but he hasn’t had a single town hall — either because he doesn’t think it’s important, or because he doesn’t have a good enough relationship with the agencies to make it happen,” Capano said.

For his part, Gentile, who took office in 2003 after a special election and was re-elected to his first full term in 2005, touted his resume.

The incumbent, who chairs the Council’s Libraries committee, said he secured locations for three new schools and funded four expansions planned for one city’s most-overcrowded districts; lined up over $4 million of investments in Bay Ridge parkland; brought the beloved Bay Ridge Greenmarket to the parking lot of Walgreens; and led the fight against transit cuts.

“I’ve developed an office with the ultimate goal being the addressing of residents’ concerns and worries,” said the councilman. “I want to make sure our families, students and neighborhoods are taken care of the way they deserve to be, no matter what.”

Conservatives acknowledge it will be hard to unseat a Democratic incumbent in one of the nation’s most liberal counties, but they say they’ve got a fighting shot.

Though Capano was blown out by 40 percentage points in his failed campaign against Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny (D–Bay Ridge) last fall, he managed to snag 53 percent of the Bay Ridge portion of that sprawling district — enough to convince Brooklyn Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar that the one-time loser has what it takes to beat Gentile on Nov. 3.

“Is he running against a tough incumbent? Yes — but he’s running in an area where there is certainly a history of Republican voting,” said Kassar. “People have pulled the lever for Bob Capano in large numbers before. I wouldn’t be putting this kind of time into it if I didn’t think there was a real chance.”

But Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf told The Brooklyn Paper that it won’t be easy for Capano to win in Bay Ridge, despite the neighborhood’s conservative history.

“Is Gentile beatable? The demographics are against it because the district is changing,” he said. “The district is becoming more Democratic, not more Republican.”

A script of Craig Eaton, Bob Capano, and Russell Gallo after Bob Loses his race:

Craig: Bob, you failed the party. You failed. It’s your fault. I didn’t want to see you before–espacially after those EXPLETIVE Atlas Shruggers EVALUATED YOU FOR MY JOB!!!!!!!!–but even more so now!

Bob: But, uh, Craig, I poured out my life to this party. I’ve been a good little acolyte. I’ve followed the code! I did what the party leaders said–

Craig: Not enough. You know, I did MORE than you did when I was running for office, you scum.

Bob: –Uh, Craig, you never ran for office…

    (Cricket Cricket Cricket)

Craig: Russell!!!!!!!! TAKE THIS GUY OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!

    Russell: Yessir!!!!!!!!!!

Craig: Oh, and by the way, Russell, I don’t think the party will be requiring your services anymore.

    Russell: What?! Why?!

Craig: Because–YOU FAILED!!!!!! IT’S YOUR FAULT, TOO!!!!!!!!

    Russell: But Craig…after all I…the things I did……….for you–

    Craig: IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!

Russell: But, I insulted women for you…I supported your failed chairmanship for a second term……I bent over backwards……..I even commented on that Atlas blog–

Russell: I did so many things I’m ashamed of—-JUST FOR YOU, and now you’re just throwing me away????????

    Craig: ……..

    Craig: Uh, YES.

Russell: (Cries while holding Capano in a headlock)

Bob: You see, this is how the party treats us–like crap.

    Russell: (Sobbing) But–Craig–there’s–no one left–but people–like–us–

    Hey Marty,
Two quick questions… Have you ever been successful (while running for City Council)? So why all the malice? Have a good day, Thanks again!

      Hey buddy,
You could ask those two questions of every party establishment figure and establishment candidate. It’s clear that they are the ones running around trying to force people in line and politically snuff people they disagree with.

I’m having a swell day, by the way. It’s Bob you doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell.

Good night. Get a clue. Thanks again!!!

        Hey Marty,
So does that mean Lucretia didn’t allow you to run this year? You’re very welcome!

I have no aspirations for political office, and I’ve never met Lucretia Regina-Potter lol. Besides, based on what I’ve read on this blog, it would seem she’s hardly an “establishment” figure, so she doesn’t have anything to do with what I said.

Then again, I’m way ahead of myself. It’s clear you either don’t know how to read or are too stupid to understand clear words lol.

It’s just a statement of fact, pond scum: BOB CAPANO WILL LOSE. Doesn’t mean I don’t like him, but he will.

He’s made a lot of mistakes and hung out with the wrong crowd. After he loses, what’s left for him?

Why don’t you go “BLEEP” yourself, buddy.

      Bleep You All?

Maybe YOU’VE run for city council? Just maybe? Why else would you emphasize “while running for city council?” Hmmmm……….

You’re just as abrasive as that Russell Gallo, and that’s saying something. lol

I won’t assume you’re an establishment figure, although you do sound like one.

You just need to read a little more on this blog, “Bleep You All.” Then you’ll understand why people are so offended by the party.

They have devastated lives, careers and elections.

This is why Craig Eaton is on probation, as that McCall gentleman said.

The party is broken, but the barbarians still run the joint.

      Not for long.

Craig, the Truth will come out on Tuesday night.
You cannot pass Go. You will go directly To Jail.
Politics is not a game for those who wish to be players.
You are on probation. You have failed miserably.
NO ONE wants to play on your team anymore.

Yeah, once the elections are over, LOCAL victory or loss is what matters (screw Bloomberg’s race, which the GOP merely sanctioned–besides, Bloomberg is not helping us in the near future).

If the party loses its races, the game is over for Eaton.

He should resign and return to salvaging his law practice.

Eaton’s law practice is finished. Maybe Marty will get him a job bussing table at the catering hall.
