The Golden Prince’s Influence Wanes as Troubling Ties to The Duke Continue

October 19, 2009

Previously, my colleagues Francisco D’Anconia and Midas Mulligan began a series with an examination of the curious and frankly bizarre relationships Sen. Marty Golden (aka “The Golden Prince”) has forged with various powerful and controversial Democrats.

Yet, as we begin to dig deeper into the financial records and the governmental bestowals of The Golden Prince, the sheer breadth of his influence and ability to generate money in a Democratically dominated state had been unparalleled.

Now, however, with the recent coup in Albany, it seems The Golden Prince’s ability to doll out pork to his constituents has hit an astounding new low, raising the question of whether his power has finally come to an end. Moreover, his financial ties to The Duke continue to raise eyebrows.

In the period between 2008 and 2009, The Golden Prince coughed up an astounding amount of money to his handpicked receivers. All in all, he gave $2,878,000 in pork, from churches to charities.

Astounding. Nearly three million dollars of government money.

That’s power.

This all has a heightened irony attached to it, given Golden’s very public pushes for more accountability in government spending.

Included in these millions of pork was $5000 to Chairman Craig “The Duke” Eaton’s charity, the MHE Research Foundation. While no one questions donations to good causes (which MHE certainly is, by my assessment), conflict of interest questions arise, given that The Duke has already given $18,000 to The Golden Prince over the past nine years. In fact, one comment posted by an Atlas reader notified us that The Golden Prince and Mayor Bloomberg were both in attendance at a recent MHE Research Foundation event, during which Sen. Golden was honored. It seems somewhat troubling that two men that Eaton received favors from and has personally favored are always nearby. One with sizable donations and the other with a 50k-100k Wilson Pakula vote.

Troubling.

In spite of this, the evidence that The Golden Prince’s power is in decline is beginning to mount. The numbers of this year’s pork are in, and they must be upsetting to the Senator.

This year, The Golden Prince has dolled out a mere $250,000 in pork items.

$250,000.

That’s nearly a 90% decrease from last year!

With the crisis in Albany earlier this year, it appears the effects of Republican losses statewide are finally getting to the senator. Whether or not Sen. Golden has finally lost control of his freely wielding power is not entirely clear at this point. But with redistricting looming in the near future and the current Democratic majority in power, things are not looking good for The Golden Prince.

Aside from alienating members in his own party by supporting Eaton’s return to power, it seems Golden has more important concerns brewing in Bay Ridge.

***

So what else do The Golden Prince’s records indicate?

Atlas will have more on that this week, so be sure to come back!

(PS: thanks to our fellow Shruggers who have been emailing us. You are the foundation of this party!)

There was always something fishy about Craig’s charity being in the same place as his law firm and having the party headquarters located at Eaton and Torrenzano. Now, with all of the connections coming to him, I’m beginning to see through the fog.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive”
Quote by Sir Walter Scott (Scottish Novelist, Poet, Historian and Biographer, 1771-1832)

Who knows what is really going on within the KCRP. It seems plausible that the “Duke of Bay Ridge” yields a great deal of power within and over the KCRP organization

It may be strange that the KCRP Chair is operating the county organization out of his private, for profit law firm office. Both entities (and maybe more) are located at 1662 Sheepshead Bay Road. That’s not prudent or wise due to possible conflicts of interests and influence peddling that could compromise and skew the Party and decision making at the top levels.

The law firm specializes in personal injury, commercial and residential real estate and general law cases. Both partners are members of the NYS Bar and were admitted in 1986.

The poster doesn’t know what the reality is….but its possible unethical things may have been going on. Irregularities and misdeeds? Perhaps. Or maybe it’s all baloney (i.e., b/s)

No wonder Marty gave money to Pedro Espada! He’s desperate to keep as much pork power as possible. Guess he fell short of Espada’s graft request.

Maybe this is a sign that Marty is honorable after all lol.

I kind of liked Marty for the same reasons most Brooklyn republicans do. I have to say, those YouTube videos skeeved me lol

There’s lots of hidden stuff in Golden and Eaton’s financials. Keep digging!

You’d think with all this money flying around, Eaton would at least get his firm a decent website!

      Eaton + Websites?

Don’t go there … his Brooklyn GOP site still lists Vito Fossella as my congressman

It’s fast becoming clear that there is a lot wrong with the Brooklyn GOP, a very deep complex of bad personalities and poor leadership decisions.

Atlas, I must say, normally I would treat all of this as just the usual patting-each-other-on-the-back syndrome, but there is something seriously wrong from everything I’ve read so far.

That Judge guy getting attacked by O’Brien was what first caught my attention. The failed website and lack of support for candidates was surprising. The poor advertising and lack of communication was embarrassing. Now, all of this money business is getting to be a bit too coincidental for my taste.

Moreover, it’s sad. The money connections are more telling about where this party has come in the borough. That you have tit-for-tat money deals in the GOP is just plain sad. It’s like a microcosm of what’s wrong with Albany right now: back room deals, donations to politically connected charities.

    Pathetic.

    You have me convinced.

Marty Golden gave money to Pedro Espada. What did he get for it? a 90% decrease in his pork money.

    Pitiful.

For all you anonymous bloggers and critics of the status quo, may I suggest that the computer and Internet savvy among you consider including “Tor”

It works better with Firefox than with Windows Internet Explorer.
