“Divisive” Political Consultant O’Brien Remains a Blight on Brooklyn GOP

October 7, 2009

It has been said in Brooklyn politics that “Gerry O’Brien has done it all.”

Oh, that he has…

Political Consultant Gerry O’Brien has been referred to by one Republican who emailed us as “the most divisive person in the party by far, at the heart of all that’s wrong with politics.” O’Brien was involved in a terrible scandal this past summer, after which this blog called on the leadership to investigate him. So far, the party has been silent.

Atlas reiterates now, one week after last week’s Brooklyn GOP County Committee Convention, that O’Brien is too controversial to be on any political party’s payroll, and should be dismissed if no investigation is performed.

You might recall Francisco D’Anconia once profiled O’Brien in his series And Then There Were None (which Francisco has asked me to tell you all he will be completing before the elections next month now that the convention coverage has subsided).

Francisco wrote:

Political Consultant Gerry O’Brien…The Merlin of Malice, Party Warlock to The Duke of Bay Ridge

I have heard through the grapevine that The Duke likes to refer to him as a “wizard” of Republican political consulting—a master. Yet, Party Warlock Gerry O’Brien has been a key player in the happenings of the party over the course of the past few years, particularly under The Duke’s reign.

While it is no secret that Gerry waves his wand for more than one party—just ask for the right price—it seems that whatever “political consulting” he has provided for the party has not helped them in any way at all. In fact, it remains a mystery to anyone who has dealt with this man why anyone keeps him around at all.

The Warlock once opined in 2007 about restoring the party: “We are going to start at the infrastructure, and we are going to bring the blue-collar Republicans back to the party.”

….Cricket….Cricket…. So much for being a Republican seer.

Nevertheless, at least he delivers a refreshing thuggery in his dealings—in fact, anyone who has dealt with him on a good day is aware of his notorious temper and violent sense of self-importance. Reliable sources have informed us at Atlas that he has threatened, cajoled, and attempted to crush anyone who gets in his way. This kind of conduct is extremely detrimental to the local party’s image and must be stopped.

One other thing is crystal clear when it comes to our Party Warlock: wherever The Duke is, the Merlin of Malice is not too far behind.

O’Brien was recently spotted actively working behind the scenes at the convention last week. We reported to you last week:

Present was sometimes GOP Warlock Gerry O’Brien, The Merlin of Malice, whom this blog has called to be investigated for his alleged conduct in the 39th City Council District Race, which was recently denounced by former District Leader Yvette Bennett. Thankfully, we have received no reports of Mr. O’Brien attacking any more Republicans this evening, although he was “wandering around the room looking at people threateningly,” one person told us.

In his own way, Francisco pointed out a question that still remains this fall after the embarrassing 39th City Council District primary race this past summer: why is the party still involved with Gerry O’Brien? Maybe they didn’t get our letter?

Here’s what we wrote to Chairman Craig “The Duke” Eaton on September 16th:

Dear Chairman Eaton,
As a reader of our blog, we here at Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn felt the need to write to you on behalf of your concerned constituents regarding the course of conduct that some of the political consultants that have been paid by the Kings County Republican Party have been demonstrating.
Most recently, on the Urban Elephants blog, a letter from Brooklyn Young Republican Club President Jonathan Judge to the party’s Executive Committee was leaked disclosing a harassment complaint and allegations on the part of Mr. Judge that he was physically harassed and threatened by political consultant Gerry O’Brien, a sometimes-Democratic consultant with clear conflicts of interests, despite the fact that the county party has provided him thousands of dollars.
Also, last week, Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn exposed the party’s financing of another consultant that has received thousands from Republicans and serves as Chair of the NYC Voter Assistance Commission, Dr. Jeffrey Kraus, who publicly insulted the Republican Party’s candidate for Public Advocate Alex Zablocki.
We write to offer you an opportunity as the current party Chairman to examine these and other corruptions that have been plaguing your county party and that are gaining attention among your fellow constituents and elsewhere. This kind of conduct is reprehensible and needs to be extricated from our party or else the Republican Party as we know it will finally cease to exist in Brooklyn.
We invite you to send us your findings so we may post them and begin to shed some light on this issue. Your voice has been missing from this discussion, and it should be heard.

We received no response. Absolutely none.

So, in light of all of the controversy surrounding him, why does the party keep him around?

Maybe he is holding something over the party leadership? Perhaps that’s why they fear him?

Granted this is idle speculation, but don’t you find it odd that this man has not been investigated and that the party has not distanced itself from him in any way?

That speaks volumes.

We know from our friends who told us about the convention that O’Brien “was told to keep a low profile” in light of what had been exposed on this blog.

We hope the establishment is not foolish enough to think we have forgotten about this shameful character running around causing controversy and pain in our party. If anything, in light of our upcoming financial exploration of our party’s dealings, we are keeping a very close eye on the flow of business and the relationship between the party and O’Brien.

As far as we here at Atlas are concerned, without any explanation of  his alleged misconduct, our party is sending a very bad message allowing the likes of O’Brien to stick around.

It is a message that will not be forgotten.

Daniel Peterson, a frequent writer of columns and also a Managing Editor on UrbanElephants.com, had this information to add (as he was responding at Yvette).

Quote: “After reading your comment I did a couple searches. Check this out.

Look at the following website designs

    http://www.brooklyngop.com

    http://www.brownstonegop.com

I’m assuming they are all owned and operated from the same source.“

In addition to the above, I recommend that Brooklyn Atlas Shruggers (aka Brooklyn Reformers and supporters) go on Urban Elephants in order to express what is really and truly happening and within the Brooklyn GOP – from 2007 to now, 2009 to date!

Those are Gerry O’Brien sites. Sad looking things, they are. He’s a terrible designer. Everything he does looks older and older as years go by.

They stuffed a sock in Gerry’s mouth at the convention. I know it. He wanted to be more of a presence, but he couldn’t. Pathetic old man.

Hey, calm down, you think this joker has any respect from anyone anymore? He slunk away into the shadows of his lair. Beware, though, Grendel might make a return sooner rather than later.

I guess that makes Atlas Beowulf.

O’Brien does not belong anywhere near Staten Island.
He is not respected, nor is he liked.
Someone put this fat jerk back in Brooklyn where he belongs.
