Eaton Gives Thousands to Golden, Raising Specter of Impropriety In Reelection Bid

October 5, 2009

You can be a chairman, too. Maybe all you have to do is find the right price.

You might want to burn after reading this, friends: how much does cost to buy the Brooklyn GOP Chairmanship?

What about $18,100? That’s how much Chairman Craig “The Duke” Eaton and his law firm have given to State Senator Marty Golden over the course of past from 2002-2008. Does this mean Eaton outright bought The Golden Prince’s support for Chairman? Well, we don’t know for sure. But this raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and financial ties the establishment figures in our party have, especially given The Golden Prince’s prominence in the party.

Perhaps the biggest story outside of “The Glitch” or the “The Threat” against the 49th Assembly District last week’s county committee convention was the blessing bestowed by The Golden Prince on The Duke of Bay Ridge at his attempted coronation.

Senator Marty Golden has been in politics for while. During that time, he has earned a great deal of respect from around the borough and the state. Of course, he has been one of the only major Republican voices in the entire city, and so Republicans do their best not to question or challenge him. But after openly supporting The Duke, serious question have come about concerning the vast conflicts of interest between The Duke giving Sen. Golden so many thousands of dollars and subsequently receiving his endorsement.

We here at Atlas, however, do not believe any politician, Republican or not, should escape scrutiny. The Golden Prince does not get to pass Go and collect $200 at every turn just for being in the GOP.

It is disconcerting, however, to see so prominent a Republican endorse such a lowly and failed Chairman for reelection, especially when it is clear to anyone who searches for donations that Sen. Golden is so financially indebted to Eaton.

Let’s examine the facts.

How much did he give The Golden Prince on the year of his first election as Chairman in 2007?

$2650.

Interesting? Yes. Troubling? Maybe. It all depends on what The Golden Prince perceived these donations to be.

It should be clear to all that donations to The Golden Prince do not make The Duke the most qualified Chairman in Brooklyn! Nevertheless, in the less than 9 years The Duke has been a Republican, he has done a good job directing money to Sen. Golden. Perhaps The Duke thinks that he can manipulate The Golden Prince to earn his support by throwing money his way? This could be.

So how much has The Duke or his firm given to The Golden Prince? Here are the numbers:

(This is all public information on the New York State Board of Elections website, folks)

The grand total is…(drumroll please)…$18,100!  That’s a lot of change to give to one politician.

So what are the possibilities here?

1. Maybe Marty Golden is grateful for The Duke’s support all of these years and is merely displaying loyalty to him by continuing to support a trusted friend. Possible.

2. The Duke is hanging $18,100 over The Golden Prince’s shoulders and has demanded continued support in spite of loss after loss and the party failing.

3. The Duke and The Golden Prince have had a longstanding deal to support each other and turn money, business, and power each other’s way.

We hope the third option is not the case. Sen. Golden has a good rapport with many Brooklyn GOPers, and in spite of his failures and his enemies’ sentiments, he could have been a pragmatic leader and cut away the dead flesh from the party that is Craig Eaton. He did not do that.

Again, we recognize the respect so many Republicans have for The Golden Prince. Yet, by endorsing The Duke, Golden made what could be the biggest mistake of his career. Lost elections and zero traction are not going to help the GOP win elections in Brooklyn. Failure of leadership is not going to get Sen. Golden reelected in the face of a Democratic challenge. Technological ineptitude is not going to spread the GOP message or raise money for GOP candidates. Only a reformist agenda can do those things.

Marty Golden, by taking a direct stand against reform in Brooklyn, is about to face scrutiny and division from the one area he has never had to before: his own party. If Eaton continues to lose (as we know he will) and fail to grow the party (as has has demonstratively done) then Sen. Golden will have to face the responsibility of Eaton’s chairmanship and accept it.

That is a fact.

    attention Misters Eaton and Golden,

In modern times the term has come to be used as a metaphor for impending doom.

This is a stunning bit of information. It changes my entire perception of the relationship between Marty and Craig. They had better watch out, because Republican or not, this does not look good.

Is any of the alleged actions or activities misfeasance or malfeasance? Do those terms apply to the esteemed KCRP leadership?

    Let’s clarify.

Ah, the usual suggestive impropriety in the Brooklyn GOP. Marty Golden is in deep trouble if he doesn’t get his act together.

Nada, Cicero! Just checking out your comment 😉

So much for Marty being “unsinkable.” I thought he had more class than to get even more in bed with that punk Eaton and his merry band of thugs.

Hopefully, he repents and gives up on Craig after the elections.

I noticed Jay Golub and Daniel Petersen commented to your story posted on Urban Elephants.

    http://www.urbanelephants.com/index.php/myblog/Eaton-Gives-Thousands-to-Golden-Raising-Specter-of-Impropriety-In-Reelection-Bid.html

Jay’s point is this: “Honestly, many would think it would be odd if Eaton, the County Chair, DIDN’T give his only elected official the fullest financial support possible. ”

Daniel’s point is: “I’m sure there are issues that need to be corrected in Brooklyn, but its like that in any county organization. If there is no scandal out there, perhaps the best thing to do is to extend an olive branch and focus on working together to build the party and bench in 2010 and beyond.”

I have to say, both of their comments were sort of sad. Basically, these two just overlooked this story as being a mere fact of life in politics.

The reality that this is EXACTLY what is wrong with our party. You had Marty Golden sending out proxies for the week of the convention to county committee members just to see Craig was elected. Craig himself submitted proxies on Kings County GOP letterhead, which to me sounds like Obama sending out letters to his constituents to reelect him on the White House’s dime.

Then you have a stretch of thousands of dollars going back to the beginning of this decade, ironically enough WHEN CRAIG EATON BECAME A REPUBLICAN from being a Democrat! After which, he magically becomes the Chairman of the Brooklyn GOP in a MERE 6 years of being a Republican. I mean, hello?! There’s something wrong here. Atlas is right to be sniffing around the money of these elected officials.

I just think it was highly inappropriate for Marty to enter the ring for Craig. He could have worked on the sidelines, but mailing out his own proxies sounds pretty funny to me. Not to mention, Craig is failing the party MISERABLY. LOSS, LOSS, AND MORE LOSS.

You guys made the right move publishing that story, and these guys don’t want to read between the lines. That’s sad, because its their party too, and our losses are their losses.
