Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Club: Beleaguered Brooklyn GOP “Still Divided and Without Guidance”

October 3, 2009

So much for The Duke unifying the Brooklyn GOP.

In a press release this evening, the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Organization, which operates out the 49th Assembly District, took Chairman Craig “The Duke” Eaton to task for his “disrespect” and divisiveness in the run up to his reelection this past Wednesday. The stinging rebuke emphasizes that there “are very strong indications that as long as he is at the helm of the Republican Party in Brooklyn, there will be no peace and unity.”

The release is clearly a response to the stunning conduct The Duke demonstrated at the County Committee Convention earlier this week, during which Eaton himself personally threatened the 49th Assembly District in front of the entire County Committee!

As we have reported, former Assemblyman and District Leader Arnaldo Ferraro, previously the founder of the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Club, openly challenged the failed Eaton establishment at this week’s convention. The challenge apparently followed an attempt at reconciliation on the part of the FLRC, a “peaceful gesture” which “Mr. Eaton refused to accept…in an adamant position of hostility and divisive tactics,” the strongly worded press release indicated. Also emphasized in the release was the astounding fact that the FLC managed to garner 340 proxies within a mere 5 days in the run-up to the convention.

Here’s the release:

The recent Kings County Republican Party Convention, held on September 30, 2009, proved once more that the beleaguered Republican Party in Brooklyn is still divided and without guidance. The “egregious miscounting of votes”, and the direct threat to the 49th Assembly District by Mr. Eaton and company, with his disrespect  for those who dared to challenge him, displayed at the Convention, are very strong indications that as long as he is at the helm of the Republican Party in Brooklyn, there will be no peace and unity.

His 880 proxies collected throughout the entire borough by the leaders of 19 Assembly District are certainly not impressive when one considers that the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Organization which operates only out the 49th Assembly District was able to collect over 340 proxies within 5 days!

Certainly the suggestion that came from the floor to put Mr. Eaton on “probation” was one the highlights of the Convention!

It was however, kind of disturbing and downright disappointing for many Republicans to witness the active participation of State Senator Marty Golden in support of Craig Eaton by collecting proxies in his own name and turning them over to his chosen candidate for Chairman. In a show of unity, and leadership, Senator Golden should have remained neutral and should have limited his appearance at the convention to the role of the only Republican elected official in Brooklyn. His message should have been what he stated at the opening of the convention-“…support for our Republican candidates.”

As usual these candidates are facing isolation and neglect from the Republican Party in Brooklyn. We have not seen any cooperation and support from Mayor Bloomberg towards our Brooklyn candidates for public office. Shouldn’t any one who receives a Wilson-Pakula have an obligation to recognize and support the candidates of the bestowing Party?

Mr. Eaton fails to mention that for the first time ever during his watch, a Republican candidate for President did not win in his home district of Bay Ridge, when instead John McCain was given the victory in the 49th Assembly District due to the 30% of the votes that the Republican candidate for the Assembly, Lucretia Regina-Potter, received. It is for certain that McCain would not have won the 49th AD without Regina-Potter’s votes. His criticism of former Assemblyman Arnaldo A. Ferraro, during the Convention, and his disregard for the fact that Arnaldo A. Ferraro was the last Republican Assemblyman in Brooklyn, proves his lack of respect for the experience, knowledge, dedication, and loyalty that Arnaldo A Ferraro brings to the Republican Party in Brooklyn. All qualities that Mr. Eaton does not possess.

For the record, before the convention the “olive branch” was offered for the benefit and good of the Republican Party by the leadership of the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Organization, but Mr. Eaton refused to accept that peaceful gesture in an adamant position of hostility and divisive tactics.

Opinion and Analysis: Short of an Ahmadinejad-styled (and, yes, Gerry O’Brien-styled) threat of wiping the 49th AD off the political map, we know from various reports by attendees of the county committee convention that Chairman Eaton was anything but reconciliatory Wednesday evening. Having failed to broker a peace (let alone run a successful party organization), The Duke and his minions orchestrated what can safely be called a rigged convention. After egregious voting miscounts and a panicky start, the convention quickly turned nasty. While Eaton might have received one bit of semi-favorable press coverage, Atlas has had thousands of viewers read about the disgusting occurrences at the convention. With this press release, the Fiorello LaGuardia organization is clearly putting their version of events out there while sending an extremely powerful message to The Duke: The truth is out there, Mr. Chairman–can you handle it?

Well, the fact is that the truth is out there. We here at Atlas are reporting it. And we will continue to do so.

I hear Craig is an antisemitic, sexist brute. What a man to run the Brooklyn GOP!

I’d rather die than be one of his minions!

Well, I don’t know if he really hates Jewish people, but he made a huge mistake putting the Lincoln Dinner on the Jewish holiday of Shavuos. What disrespect! I’m not even personally Jewish, and I was offended.

There are so many reasons to dislike The Duke, especially his minions who write on reform blogs while criticizing bloggers who write on reform. They have no message. They want no reform. They suck.

I’m absolutely not a McCain supporter but it seems the Eaton camp will be using the same tactics the McCain camp used to subvert the republican party.

I’m so worried about the upcoming elections. With Craig splitting the party and doing nothing to grow it, I think the elections in November could be the biggest embarrassment this party has faced since Vito…well, maybe Powers. That was sad.
