First Evaluation for New Brooklyn GOP Chairman: Bob Capano

September 23, 2009

As we’ve said, we here at Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn are evaluating the most likely individuals to be the new Brooklyn GOP Chair.

PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE EVALUATIONS, NOT RECOMMENDATIONS. If, by next week, one candidate stands above them all, any of my colleagues or I might take a stand in favor of a candidate. At the outset, we lay these options down for you, the constituents of the party, to become familiar with the figures most likely to succeed current Chairman, Craig “The Duke of Bay Ridge” Eaton.

See these evaluations as general overviews. I want to be as fair as possible in this process, and you all are free to examine my evaluations, comment on them, and offer your insights. Of course, you can always email us as AtlasShrugsInBrooklyn@gmail.com with your thoughts and suggestions! After we’re done, Atlas will post a summation of all the likely successors for you all to consider.

First, let’s start with City Council Candidate Bob Capano.

While I don’t think Francisco is fond of him, Bob has been, at the very least, active.

What do we know about his background? Well, lets take a look.

His website says:

“Bob is a lifelong resident of Bay Ridge with an impressive background in community service. Bob has a Master of Arts degree in Urban Policy and Administration from Brooklyn College and received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from SUNY New Paltz. He Graduated from St. Patrick’s elementary school and Xaverian High School. He also attended P.S. 104 and P.S. 185.

“Bob is an Adjunct Political Science Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Saint Francis College. Bob Capano worked as a high school English and Social Studies teacher at St. Edmund’s High School in Brooklyn, managed a Grand Union supermarket, and later served as a top aide to Borough President Marty Markowitz and our local Congressman…

“He chaired the Civic Affairs committee of the Bay Ridge Community Council.

“Bob served as Vice President of the Bay Ridge Consumer Federation.

“He was a member of the 68th Precinct Community Council.

“Bob is the former President of the 68th Precinct Youth Council, which serves over 1,100 children with recreational baseball and soccer programs in Brooklyn.

“Now Bob is running for City Council in the September 15th Republican Primary Election.”

One interesting tidbit he leaves out is being a former President of the Brooklyn Young Republicans (a picture of him can be found in one of their earlier album photos) and that he worked directly for disgraced former Councilman Vito Fossella, referred to by Francisco as “Don Giovanni.”

What else do we know? We know that $10,000 from Capano for Assembly was given to the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee (RACC), which means he can raise money. Money, like it or not, does equal clout in this state (and pretty much everywhere).

Bob’s negatives?

He seems to be a little too close to the beleaguered current establishment, including The Duke and Political Consultant Gerry O’Brien, who has been the source of ire for many Republicans over his alleged dealings. More importantly, he has not succeeded in an election or at least built a major base of support that he has profited from this year. Nonetheless, I am happy to see Mr. Capano finally has a nice new website up and running (announced very late on September 18th). Without that, I wouldn’t have even considered him.

He claims to be “bipartisan” because he worked with Brooklyn Borough President Marty M…I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

Is he capable? The honest answer is we just don’t know. He has experience, but the facts and the rumors around him leave room for doubt as to whether he’s prepared to take on the reigns of reform in our party.

Why he’s unlikely to succeed: he’s a current candidate, and now (with an active website) a man with other priorities. Not that he couldn’t do both technically, but the Chairmanship, if used effectively, cannot be ignored or marginalized.

Nevertheless, Craig Eaton should understand he is a likely opponent of his in the upcoming county committee, whether he knows it or not.

P.S. Come back later today for my next evaluation!

I thought of Bob actually. He’s a nice guy, works hard. I don’t know how tough he is. He’s definitely on the list; whether he’s on the short list is the question

Yeah, I don’t know why Bob has been shady with the YR’s. I can understand Fossella though. Don Giovanni! haha

Regarding Bob Capano – “He seems to be a little too close to the beleaguered current establishment.” That alone says it all.

Bob Capano is too close to the current “powers that be” – mainly the lawyer, Craig A. Eaton Esq., who operates the KCRP out of his (and partner Jay Torrenzano Esq.) law firm, Eaton and Torrenzano LLP, located 1662 Sheepshead Bay Road, Brooklyn NY 11235.

This connection DOES NOT PASS THE SMELL TEST! If Bob is the next KCRP chairman, it will not help or improve the situation. Mr. Eaton will still be involved behind the scenes.

What the current establishment asks of its foot soldiers: “Ours is not to reason why. Ours is but to do and die.”

No accountability, no responsibility, and no reform. It’s time for a change.

Bob Capano is part of the Bloomberg/Klein establishment. He supports Charter Schools and I bet that Bloomberg is behind him. Did they offer him to run one of the Charter Schools in Bay Ridge?
